Some of us can remember the "pre PC" days. Life is a series of circles and pendulum swings. Right now we're mired in political correctness. Eventually, things will change. And when they do, this coin will become an enduring symbol of PC insanity.

Those who bought 100 or more: What have you done with them? Slabbed the best, keeping the 70s and releasing the rest into the wild? Are you hanging onto them all? Sold a few? Traded some for other coins? Fashioned them into functional campsite tools? Parked them in a safe? Given them to Scouts?
How many of these coins were unceremoniously consigned to the melting pot during silver's recent run-up, along with countless Morgan and Peace dollars, 1964 Kennedys, and Grandpa's old crowns (his world coins, not his dentalwork... although perhaps the latter, as well)?
Literally this morning, your very own Longacre signed up to be Den Leader™ to a bunch of young Tiger cubs (including Little Longacre, a mere tike of 6 years old). The first Den meeting will be held in my personal library, complete with a brandy tasting and a few fine imported cigars.
I have not yet purchased any of the commemoratives, but I will have to check them out.
On a related topic, I keep getting emails from the Lions Club (another organization that I belong to, in which Longacre was awarded Lion of the Year™ recently), asking that we harass Congress to pass legislation for a Lions Club commemorative. Given that the average age of my club is 85 (dropped from an average age of 90 when I joined), I think most of the solicitations will be on quill and parchment.

Not to pick on you, but I had the opportunity to show one of these to a number of Boy Scouts and Boy Scout leaders a month ago. With a single exception, they LOVED the design. Since they know that girls are part of the Boy Scout organization, not one of them even mentioned the presence of a girl on the commemorative. Three of them wanted to know if I could get one for them, and were quite happy that they were available. I hope they waited for the silver sell-off, when they got much cheaper!
My first choice with the original designs was the one with one scout helping another scout up a hill or mountain, but I think the final design was pretty nice, too. I remember how heated some of the discussions were when this first came out -- it might be time to cool down the rhetoric.
I am not an Eagle Scout, but I was a leader for all three of my sons, beginning when they were Tiger Scouts. Have fun with this, Longacre!

The design had absolutely nothing to do with being politically correct as the Boy Scouts of America welcomes female participants through its Venturing program which has been a part of BSA since the late 90's.
Venturing was created to offset the loss of the Explorer Program and is aimed at youth, boh male and female, from the ages of 18 to 21. There is no Eagle Scout Program for Venturers but boys can be a part of both programs up until their 18th Birthday in which case they then participate only as Venturers.
There are many women that are physically active in outdoor camping and recreational skills that take full advantage of the Leadership Program offered by the Boy Scouts and having them recognized on the commemorative was the right thing to do since BSA is not a BOYS ONLY organization whereas the Girl Scouts of America is a GIRLS ONLY organization.
The Boy Scouts of America is an organization aimed at the youth of America, both Male and Female.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

Last month I was recruited to be the Executive Director of a new Venture Crew , which is being formed though the support of my local Elks lodge. Formed in 2002, Venture Scouts is growing remarkably fast, is a lot less formal than Boy Scouts, with fewer meetings, and less emphasis on ranks, badges, etc. The emphasis is to provide young adults (14-21) with some great opportunities to develop through challenging treks, and involvement in community service. One of the neighboring crew's my sons are involved in went to Mt. Kilimonjaro last year!
The coin's still too PC for my taste, and the subjects cartoon like, but most modern commemoratives appear that way to me. The mint could do so much better!
Despite that I'll be buying these for years to come as mentioned before.
A year and a half later, how's the secondary market looking for these coins? Are you actively buying, selling, and trading them on a daily basis? Those of you who bought hundreds or thousands: have you moved any into real estate, fine art, or other investments and commodities?
I had been saving up my money to invest in one on the secondary market, but had yet to pull the trigger, being the fence-sitter than I tend to be. I officially got off the fence at the CSNS show and decided the money would better be invested in soft-shelled crabs at Friday's dinner.

I agree, although i never made it to eagle scout. I am still scarred for life for having to wear my B.S. uniform to school on wensdays in 1971, 72 and 1973. The elementary school i attended started busing in kids from all over the city and some of those kids were more worldly than me and my fellow boy scouts. I learned to fight in my boy scout uniform. lolk

I agree, although i never made it to eagle scout. I am still scarred for life for having to wear my B.S. uniform to school on wensdays in 1971, 72 and 1973. The elementary school i attended started busing in kids from all over the city and some of those kids were more worldly than me and my fellow boy scouts. I learned to fight in my boy scout uniform. lolk >>
That is sad but there should have been a merit badge for that-especially if you could manage to keep your uniform clean through it all.

Not all, but a significant portion of the U.S. Mint's products within the last 30 years have been flops. I am not the least bit surprised.

I believe that Boy Scouts is for boys only even today. The organization has broadened out to include associated mixed gender sub-groups but Boy Scouts is still for boys only. If the commemorative just honored "Scouting" then it would be appropriate but since they specifically honor "Boy Scouts" then portraying a girl is just absurd on its face IMO. It would be like portraying a white looking guy with a cowboy hat on a Native American coin and justifying it because they found a 1/16th part cherokee that looks like that today. How do you think that would fly?

That may be so, but a Webelo is NOT a Boy Scout. It is actually the highest rank in Cub Scouting.
Coins was correct. Webelos is a time in a scouts life when he is still too young to be a Boy Scout.
Many claim it is a bridge from Cub Scouting to Boy Scouting.
With all this said, I'm gonna get me a Webelo medal.

I saw the girl scout design. Did not see a boy anywhere. This brings to mind the annoying sense that so often male centered organizations are pressured by some to include women (girls) but female centered organizations never seem to feel that heat. While I supposed that our government/media is out to eliminate certain double standards it seems they are just creating new ones to replace old ones. This is why I could not get these coins because my coins must not contribute to high blood pressure. >>
I'm surprised the Boy Scouts lets girls in. They're a private organization and have a pretty good track record of keeping out kids they don't want in. >>

Girl Scouts of America, on the other hand, is an organization designed specifically for girls. Their literature does not address the Youth of America but instead addresses "girls". As such, males are not allowed in GSA as far as I know.

I believe that Boy Scouts is for boys only even today. The organization has broadened out to include associated mixed gender sub-groups but Boy Scouts is still for boys only. If the commemorative just honored "Scouting" then it would be appropriate but since they specifically honor "Boy Scouts" then portraying a girl is just absurd on its face IMO. It would be like portraying a white looking guy with a cowboy hat on a Native American coin and justifying it because they found a 1/16th part cherokee that looks like that today. How do you think that would fly?
