Dimeman sent me a 1928-S PCGS graded coin in the mail on September 9, from Altamont, Il 62411. I received an empty envelope today. Jon's post office clerk confirmed there was an item in the envelope when he sent it. The clerk by my verifyed it was empty when he put it in my PO Box in Sturtevant, WI 53177.

Jon purchased the coin from Heritage at aution and states the coin is a large S (unattributed on the holder)

Look for it along the transit route between the two post offices. Many items do not follow a direct path - it might have gone to Cleveland before making it to WI.

<< <i>Can you describe what you mean by envelope ie how it was packaged/sealed for all to be aware. >>

Jon used a standard white business size envelope with self sealing adhisive. He said he had the pcgs holdered coin was in a cardboard insert (not there when I received the empty envelope). The post office marked it "Received without contents.

Nasty.... not the first item that disappeard in the mail.... I received an empty package once - was supposed to be a gold double eagle - and the packing had obviously been tampered with. Fortunately, the seller made good on the item, and he dealt with the Post Office. Cheers, RickO
  • That sucks!! Every time I send coins with the usps I completely
tape the package with a reinforced shipping tape and tape the contents to the inside of the package. I had a lot of problems
last year and had to file several reports to the postmaster
and my problems magicaly stopped. I also package and address the contents just incase it becomes separated from the shipping
envelope. I try to make it so the only way the contents can get seperated from the shipping envelope is if someone intentionally
    removes the contents.
Give the laziest man the toughest job and he will find the easiest way to get it done.

With all due respect to the shipper, better packaging methods might have prevented this. For about $2 more it could have been shipped in a small prirorty mail cardboard box that is both harder to open on its own and harder to open with a little help. It's possible the envelope got opened going through the letter sorting machinery. I only mention this so that others can learn from this incident. Will keep my eyes out for the coin in my area.

    That sucks!
I hope it is found and I hope whoever did it is caught!

I had a board member mail me 2 coins a couple of years ago. Someone had done a careful slit to the back, that wasn't too easy to see unless one went to look for it or noticed something.
    1 of 2 coins was missing (large cent - 1855 I believe....nice from the pics I saw image ).
Since I noticed it right at the post office when picking it up (I open most packages by the time I get to my truck, unless they are addressed to my son), I showed the clerk and the process for insurance was easier I believe.

Since then, I now try to use the paper tape across envelope seems as well....and, when I use the larger manila envelopes, I even put a strip down the center in the back (even with no seam), just to try to make it is likely someone will try something.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I think almost all of these type of losses occur due to envelope failure. I take the heck out of anything over $2000. I especially tape the flat rate envelopes as they are not very strong. auction catalogs show up hanging out at all 4 corners.

For less expensive coins I use padded envelopes. much tougher and cheap insurance at .11 ea. Also, anthing in a white envelope can be accidentally sent to the automatic mail sorter, even if it shouldn't.

    Good luck finding the coin.

Oh man, that isn't good. Sorry to hear of this ...

I'll watch for it ... but I doubt I'll see her out West ... ya never know though.

Hope it shows, but my experience and conversations about this type of stuff is that chances are slim

    Good luck!

The best bet of finding it is if the idiot that ends up with it posts it in its PCGS holder on eBay...crossing fingers for Jon and Tony.

Sorry to hear about the loss; at least insurance was
on the envelope. As Dimeman shipped the coin, is this
    his responsibility ?

I might have sent it in a Priority envelope with USPS
tape sealing the edges. But - hindsight is 20/20.

  • last week was a bad week for me and the USPS.....I sent 100 German 20Mark gold coins via Express Mail (box in a box with the inner box labeled with all the destination and return info and sealed with that brown fiber tape) and they were taken out of the box and replaced with a phone directory...........only $32K value.........insurance is going to cover it but what a pain to deal with. Based on my conversations with the insurance company, USPS is having a buch of packages come up missing and tampered with, even registered/insured.........just FYI

#10 envelopes are for letters only not coins especially slabbed coins. And I hate to say it but the Postal Service can deny the claim because the item was not packed correctly.

Good luck in the search but I do not see this ending well for either of you.

I don't see how you can say the post office has a leg to stand on.

They took the package and the insurance money. At that point THEY are responsible for it until it gets to the buyer.

Someone in the postal route this took opened it...removed contents...and sent it on.

No matter how you package it this could be done.

Agree. If it wasn't packaged properly, the Post Office should have refused to accept the package.
