Why did this sell so low?

Am I missing something?

I was watching, got busy at work and did not get to bid.

PCGS guide is around $1000.

Is it real? Bad time to end auction, did I miss out, or did I avoid a headache?

It looks genuine, but the images don't show the coin off very well. I paid roughly $800 for a really nice NGC/CAC AU58 recently.

I was gonna bid $825 max, but I got busy at work. UUUUUGGGHHH

I have a feeling it looks alot better than the pics.

It actually looks correctly graded , I usally notice a grade higher with NGC, But I see this as a au 58, and it would have looked real nice in my super slider collection.

    DANG IT!

In my opinion the strike is a little soft, which is not unusual, and the coin might be an AU55. However, the greatest factor was likely the washed out scan images that make the coin look rather blah.

    Let's see ...

The coin looks dull with no luster, and there is quite a bit of wear showing up in the reverse. This coin comes well struck. I'd say that it's a nice EF. Gray Sheet bid in AU is $275.

I don't see any bargain here.

It's sort of apples and oranges, but I paid $1,100 for this MS-62 in 2004. This coin runs circles around the piece in that ebay auction.

The brighter parts of the coin are in the housed areas and this is likely the luster. The brighter spots do not extend into the field, therefore I am thinking the luster is subdued. Looks about right at $500 from those pictures.

So I take that low end AU Reeded Edge 1838 half dollars are worth three times the Gray Sheet? image

I could see a real "primo" AU-58 bring close to MS-60 money ($840), but a low end AU? image

With those pics (they're just DLRC pics, right?) there is no way to tell if the coin is high end or low end. It could be a steal for someone or maybe someone overpaid. No way to tell.

Silver coins with coffee-color toning and no visible luster are heavily discounted in the marketplace.

Regardless of what you think of the coin - and I don't assume, just based on those images, that it is as you describe it - because it has been graded AU58 by a major TPG, it is "worth" considerably more than CDN AU bid. As I understand it, AU in the CDN equates with AU50.

The sign on the eBay offering says "AU-58," but the GRADE ON THE HOLDER is AU-50.

This is why I'm having a problem understanding this "missed a bargain" discussion. image

I hadn't looked at the holder, just the coin and the listing title. Based on the information you provided, there was no bargain to be had.image

Check again...the coin in the OP's link is in an AU58 holder.

I'm confused. When I click on that link there are TEM 1838 Reeded edge half dollars on the page. Which one did he miss? The best one is an AU-53 CAC and gold shield @ $999.00. There also some raw coins that look like dogs.

I see this coin as a PCGS 50 for visible obverse wear. The other negative, is that I believe the coin to be very dark, based on the look of the NGC holder color. Probably shows no luster through the dark toning.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • Why don't you use a snipe program? There is no excuse for missing an auction that you were interested in.

Those pictures suck. I wouldn't buy that coin based on those pictures. There's no luster apparent, but I'm guessing (if it's accurately graded and problem-free) there should be a lot of luster..

Auction ended at a chitty time, I know snipe.

3 people did. We also have no way of knowing what the amount was of the last snipe.

The winner won it because the runner up only bid 501.00, The winner could have placed an 850.00 snipe for all anyone knows.

That's what I tell myself when it happens to me anyway.

    Sorry you lost out.

    Good for you.
