a metric tonne of gold

Equals 32,150 ounces ??? Can someone give me a picture of the size of that ? Would it fit in a kitchen sink, grocery cart ?

    1 metric ton = 32,150.746 troy oz = 1,000,000 grams.

The density of gold is 19.3 grams/ml.

    1,000,000 grams/19.3 grams/ml = 51,813.471 ml = 51.813 L ~ 50 quarts.

So, 1 metric ton fits into ~ 12 one gallon milk jugs.

BTW, the illustration above is correct. 37.27 cm cubed is real close to 51,813.471 ml

In the american standard system, it's about a 14 3/4" cube.

would fit well within one side of a kitchen sink, but I don't know of one made that's rated for a metric ton.

Not really...if you convert the cm to inches....14.67" x 14.67 x 14.67... or just slightly larger than a square foot.

  • My kitchen sink has 2 identical bowls of dimensions 37cm x 34cm x 19cm. If melted and then poured, my sink would hold exactly 29,663 troy ounces of pure gold, or about 92% of a metric tonne.

Of course, that gold would promptly end up in my basement after collapsing through my base cabinets and my subfloor! image

I remember reading, but can't be sure where ?Kitco, that all the world's gold above ground could fit into a swimming pool. I wanted to ask, is that an Olympic size pool, how deep, etc for dimensions? but decided not to. Has anyone studied this further?

  • In all of history, only 161,000 tons of gold have been mined, barely enough to fill two Olympic-size swimming pools.

Anyone know the approximate total population of earth? It would be interesting to divide the total weight of gold in existence by the total population of earth to figure out how much gold each person would have if it were evenly divided among the earth's population. I would guess less than an ounce for each person.

Amazing when you think that a ton of gold fits in a cube just slightly smaller than 15" per edge!!

I know I have seen some movies where the bad guys run out of a bank vault carrying duffel bags loaded with gold bars that they just throw in a car and drive away - what a laugh!!!

Absolutely not. Even if everyone got an equal share of gold, in a few years 90% of the gold would be in the hands of 5% of the population.
