When I was in high school I paid a classmate $60 for two gold pieces, a $2.50 and a $5 gold. That set off a coin frenzy in the school. One guy who was a couple of years ahead of me sold me an 1876 Indian that was an EF-45. That coin always struck in my mind despite the fact it went with my Indian cent set when I sold it. Since then I have always had an 1876 cent in my collection.
Beyond that I have long had an interest in the 1876 centennial mint medals in the original boxes. I have three different varieties of them at the moment.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
My favorite pattern was made in 1876. The Sailor Head dollar with no stars or inscription on the obverse. I once got to hold it in silver.

Several forumites are treating this as a joke but the American public though it was a major tragedy at the time. How would you feel if a unit of several hundred Marines were wiped out tomorrow in Afghanistan? >>
Being from Montana, this was a fairly lengthy unit in Montana History in high school. I drive by the battlefield everytime I drive back to Montana from Colorado.

Here's another 1876 quarter bought years ago in a PC 67 holder, never sent for a plus or to CAC, still in it's original holder. I think it rivals the one analyst wrote about.
I think about it as a transitional point in the mint. The mint was reworking their hubs on silver coins like dimes and trade dollars. It make for fun hunting.
Like most folks, I thought of the U. S. Centennial and Custer's Last Stand. I also thought of my two 1876 Carson City coins. The quarter photos are courtesy of CRO and the half dollar photos are courtesy of BluCC. Both coins are part of my in-progress Carson City Green Label Type Set.

Is it true that George Custer wore arrow shirts?
It brings back fond memories of the PCGS certified coins from the year 1876 that I have written about with enthusiasm.
