1 Gram Gold Bar Thoughts

What are your thoughts on stacking 1 gram gold bars? I have around 65 or so and just purchased (50) 1 Gram Istanbul Refinery Bars for $39.00 each today from a guy on craigslist(in the package with hologram sticker on back and yellow assy card)......thought it was pretty decent deal at 84 cents a piece over melt. So, that just got me wondering what the overall "census" of the board is when it comes to collecting/stacking 1 Gram Bars?

Not familiar with this brand bar. Are you sure they're real? How liquid are they? Will the local B&M dealer buy them if you need to make a quick sale? Got any pics?

1/10 & 1/4 oz is as small as I personally will stack. The 1 grams are so small and are packaged large.

Selling them quick is no picnic unless you take a big loss.

Just try to unload those "Turkey"(s) bars and you'll find out why they sold so cheap. Way to small for my blood and not very liquid in the US.

I agree with gsa1fan and pmcollector, 1/10 & 1/4 are the way to go.
Though, I bought (and wil buy) some 1g bars for my collection since I like the variety.
    Stacking them? No way.
The top tier have a too large premium and, in your case, you will face a small premium when it happens to sell them.
However, if gold goes to $2000 you will have a profit! image

Anyway, buy what you like! With gold you can't go wrong.
  • thanks for the responses, yes i am 100% sure they are the real deal. These Istanbul Refinery bars sell all day on ebay for 40-46 bucks each. My local B&M will buy them for a buck over melt...the owner said that deal is good till i run out! So, for .84 each over melt i'm already in the black if I need to sell, and they have some potential to make a few bucks a piece for me.

I'll pass also...my eyesight doesn't need the exercise....You will need a magnifying glass to identify the bars, which btw are 9999 fine.
I'm waiting for someone to come along and tell us what a deal they got on a 1 grain bar.image

Pass. I'm not really interested in small bars, so I'm kinda biased. But I could have sworn I saw those carried by the same people who sell those buffalo and generic maple leaf bars.

I just don't see much of a reason to own anything smaller than a quarter ounce. You've got a wide range of options at that size. And if you really, really need to go lower, a 1/10th eagle would be superior to the 3 or so 1-gram bars. To me, at least.

  • Nothing wrong with having a few 1g bars but it sounds like you have plenty already.

I'd switch to 2.5g or 5g if you want to stack more small gold bars. JMHO.

As long as you can get them for a small premium over melt, they're a good deal, but I would think 1 ounce coins would be the most liquid and carry the smallest premium.

  • interesting discussion/thoughts! I personally have about 21oz of gold total and the fractional bars (1g, 2.5g, 5g and 10g) make up about 6 total oz of the total. Most of it is in pre '33 gold, pandas, maple leafs, buffalos, and AGE. I just tend to like the small fractional bars, so i pick them up when i can get them close to spot.

  • I had a .9999 that I traded along with a 1/10 kangaroo for a 5g pamp suisse. I still have an Istanabul 1g .995, however, and am thinking about getting rid of it. Like the other posters mentioned, it's just too small for me.
  • If you can still get them at a decent premium, them you should buy them. Most of the 1-gram gold bars that I have seen (mostly on ebay and on other online places) are way over priced IMO.

Is that 1 grain "bar" made of gold leaf? Looks like the packaging costs more than the gold.

on Ebay the 1 gram bars do fairly well. I would only buy them to flip on ebay. Stacking wise, 1/10ths would be the smallest I would go. I like 1/4th and 1/2ozs.
