Great thread! That was one heck of an auction. In my opinion, it was the most important sale of the 1800s, and the one that really set the standard for future auctions.

    Marvelous story and plates, thanks.

I was stuck in the elevator or I would have bought more.

A few more facts about Parmelee and his coins.

The catalogue shows both 1844-O $5 and $10 gold proofs. Bob Lecce showed me the $10 in the late 80's. Gem!!! The $5 has not been seen or heard from since its appearance in the auction..

MrE, Don Kagin and I bought the Parmelee 1792 Silver Disme, one of three known out of a Stacks sale in the early 2000's for $103,500.

The 2nd nicest and second worst, it could be described as having the details of a full VF, two wholesome original scratches catalogued to that sale as located on the obverse, net VG.

Parmelee's price code, based on his experiences with many dealers, was M-E-N-D-A-C-I-O-U-S . . image
