When the 'best offer' option goes bad...

I list a pop one of a modern rookie card with as a BIN and allow Best Offers. Nothing special, but a solid card (PSA 10 2008 Brook Lopez Bowman Chrome Refractor). He's no superstar, but still a very solid young player on the up and up. I don't expect much, but shoot for the moon with a BIN of $48. I get an offer. The offer? $4. I instantly put on the auto-decline option at $15. How do you negotiate an offer that comes in at 8% of your BIN?
Looking for rare Randy Moss rookies and autos, as well as '97 PMG Red Football cards for my set.

Look at past sales to see what your card has REALISTICALLY been selling for. Has the card been selling for $4-6 bucks? Maybe the offer is telling you something....

It's a pop 1 - and had difficulty locating past psa 10 sales of his other rookies. I just thought it was a pointless offer. And tomgshotput - I guess I feel it would be difficult to work out a deal with anyone coming in that low to begin with. I didn't bother to counter. It's one thing lowball at 40%-60% to start the negotiating process, but this seemed silly.

Ignore the offer is right. If they are serious they get 3 shots at it. I've had some serious people start low, get turned down on the first 2 then email to see what it would take. Others just try the one time, spur of the moment thing, try to steal it and move on. That's why the auto decline feature is there, don't worry about anything that happens below it. It just isn't worth the time.

PSA 10 copies of modern chrome cards just don't have much of a market unless it's of a super-prospect. The average everyday guy isn't going to get much of a premium because of the grade. Prospectors want to see chrome cards in BGS slabs because they are presumed to weigh more heavily upon surface issues, like refractor lines, than PSA.

I have had something similar. I had a card BIN or BO 99.99 and was willing to take 75.00 or more for it on offers. A flipster gave me a 20.00 offer which I declined w/o a counter offer. The funny thing is 2 days later someone else came along and offered the 75.00 I wanted. Now the card is long gone and I am happy I got what I wanted for the card...

    Would you take $5.00

I would just hold onto it unless you are desperate for money. The Nets "should" be better next season and Brook has the talent and potential to average 20 and 10 or better.

I guess my main point is why would anyone make an offer this low that will most likely 'insult' (for lack of a better word) the seller and not open up doors for negotiating? I know I can ignore, but what is the buyers motivation? Even with the auto-decline option, it seems like a fruitless effort on the buyers part.

And Jivan - I have a ballpark idea, but no - I couldn't tell you what I want for it...but I certainly know what I don't want for it. I don't think it's mandatory to know exactly what I want for it.

Perhaps it was to acquire the card for a very small amount. Even if the possibility was near zero, how much did it cost him? Six seconds, maybe

Perhaps the real reasons the doors to negotiation are closed is because you refuse to take the few seconds required to think about how much you value the card (pretty tough to negotiate when all you can say is "somewhere above $4, but not any higher than $48")

I also agree with that statment 100%!! Especially if its rare (when i mean rare i mean less then 5 listed on ebay (which again now adays people forget is WORLD wide not just there living room) i think 5 listed world wide is pretty darn rare! again it depends on how rare an item is if there are a bunch at buy it now (probably 10 or more) ill usually list about 10% higher then the highest price avaible and usually Auto decline anything thats 25% less then My BIN

same thing happen to me i had an orange bowl program for $75 (really wanting $50 for it) some dingbat(flipster) came along and offered me $20 for lol umm i was the only one to have it listed and i had only had it up there for about a week! so his offer was AUTO declined well i get an email from him asking how much i really want for this i told him and he was like Thats to much for me i told him well your more then welcome to purchase it from someone else (oh yeah i was the only one that had one listed) well 2 weeks later someone came along and best offered $65 SOLD and i got $15 more then i wanted. now adays the name of the game with ebay is PATIENCE dont just sell to the first joe shmoe that comes along with a lowball offer. thank god for the threshold option on Best offer!

You could just let the offer sit there. It may make the next person think they have to offer a good deal or hit the BIN if there's an offer out already.
