Poll: Who Collects First Spouse Gold?

News and Interest on First Spouse coins seems intermittent at best. Makes me wonder who here is collecting and WHAT? Bonus topic: speculate on the future success or failure of this series. Thanks!
Edited poll to add "Both" options. Shoulda thought of that.

<< <i>Didn't have an option for collecting both uncs and proofs...
Oops, sorry about that. Will try to put one in.

cool. I already voted, but right now I'm doing the Liberty subset in proof and uncirculated... I started out buying all of them in proof and unc, but found myself gettinng bored with the series when the Anna Harrison coins came out... I figured I'd much rather be putting that $5k-$6k per year into classic U.S. coins
Not sure about the long term on this series. Sure there will be some super low mintages in comparison to the mintages of other U.S. commemorative coins, but with around 40 different coins (around 80 counting proofs and uncs) having relatively low mintages there will likely be no single key date spouse coin. Perhaps the upcoming Alice Paul coin who isn't even a spouse and isn't even someone who has anything to do with the corresponding president will be a very low demand resulting in low mintage, but still not sure many care today or that many will care in the future.
I'm confident the Liberty sub-series will do well in the future though, they are just really cool classic designs and have appeal to many collectors independent of the spouse series. It seems that the Jackson and Van Buren Liberty coins are already going for pretty healthy premiums over melt.

Thanks for playing, everyone!
The price of gold is set by faith, or lack of, in the currency it is priced in.

I love the coins, but my mentor said I won't survive as a dealer if I keep loving coins and purchasing them from the mint. When he saw my first spouses in the counter after the "swap", his eyes lit up.
Q: Guess who bought my first spouse gold coins ?
A: The dealer who sold me his shop.
Q: Guess who mentored me ?
A: The dealer who sold me his shop.
Now remember kids : the U.S. Mint delivers but you have to step up to the plate.
Gold has gone up a few hundy since this program started.

Some interesting trends, too:
* After a strong hostile response to the series, antipathy seems to have settled around 40%.
* With 1/3 answering that they actually collect some or all of the series (versus just picking them up now and then), I consider that a pretty big positive for the series.
* MOST surprising, is the number of Hillary versus Laura fans. Gotta feel sorry for 'ole Laura. Destined for the scrap heap of history? I probably should have added a category for Jackie Kennedy, but was afraid it would pull too many serious answers from the poll.
Thanks again for answering, everyone. Tell all your friends!

especially considering there will not be a coin for either Hillary or Laura unless their husbands die before 2015 or so. So far, Nancy Reagan will be the final coin (skipping over Mrs. Carter as her husband is still living).

<< <i>Grits what sample space are you using? I do not see the significance statistically.... >>
Agree. This poll is, as I write, at 100 total responses- and considering it is theoretically possible to vote more than once using an alt id, and the people polled are on a board skewed towards those with a collector mindset, the results are imo far from scientific.
As to the poll question I chose the "pick them up now & then" option... I only own the two Jeffersons personally but would consider keeping the rest of the classic design subset. I wouldn't pay a significant premium for them however. As a series the First Spouses are boring, plain and unimaginative- and barring some extremely tiny mintage rarity, these will remain strictly bullion stuff in this market imo. From a dealer standpoint, things like this are low margin and tie up cash flow. Plus, with rising gold values and high US Mint premiums (as with the high relief 1 oz. saint) these overpriced bullion-related pseudo-collectible issues are also pulling a lot of collector dollars away from the classic coin market. jmho

I do find telephoto's comment about pulling money away from Classics interesting. It wouldn't surprise me if this is true. OTOH, my feeling is that these pots of money are often divided. I focus on Moderns largely because I do not know enough about Classics to buy them without getting ripped off and where I'm located, there's little opportunity to learn, browse, or buy in person. I suspect a lot of people feel the same way. If I went out and bought a First Spouse, it's probably not money I would have used to buy a Classic instead. I'd be interested to hear what others say. I also find it exciting to get in on the ground floor of collecting what I think will be some very sought-after series in the future. Still, First Spouses have not caught my imagination or interest to a very high degree.
$50 over melt if you work at it. Wonder how long that will last. Of course, I also wonder how
long gold will keep going up, as this makes the initial purchase a pretty easy call.
<< <i>No option in the poll for the bronze medals for us po folks?
Sorry, NC, had to draw the line somewhere--though yours might indeed be the wisest option! I've picked up a few of the Mint's bronzes recently and really like 'em. They make great pocket pieces.
Unless I could buy them at melt !
