POLL: What is your approx allocation of gold/silver?

Just curious to see what the average % allocation is among members in regards to their gold and silver holdings. I suspect that im far too gold heavy at 80/20 as expressed in dollar value. In other words, 80% of the value of my bullion holdings is in the form of gold. I realize that some of you also dabble in Pt and Pd. For the ease of calculations, lets just pretend those 2 metals do not exist. Please do your calculations based on just your gold and silver holdings. Im excited to see what some of my comrades here are doing, and if my allocation is completely lopsided.

I'm a little heavier in gold than silver, but once you reach a certain amount of accumulation, silver just takes up too much secure storage space compared to gold.

Edited to add my actual percent metals:

    Ag: 42.4%
    Au: 52%
    Pd: 1.8%
    Pt: 3.8%

I put 10/90 gold/silver but I have actually a much lower percentage of gold and there was no option in the poll to express that. If you included palladium with gold it would be about 10/90.

Many members will have many different answers to this poll. I wonder if there is a "correct" allocation however? Anything can be justified with a well thought out, sound logical argument. Is there a universal "sweetspot" as far as this topic is concerned? Or is much more a matter of personal opinion?

Sebrown makes a most excellent point. $10,000 worth of silver weighs about 40 pounds while $10,000 worth of gold weighs just 8 troy ounces. This has been a factor in my aquisition process for sure.

Just think what will happen when silver is appropriately priced in the market. Those who have invested in silver won't be complaining that it weighs too much.

image You are 110% correct my friend! If silver hit $25+ by the fall, I would not even be slightly surprised. There are so many good arguments as to why silver is undervalued right now, it sure seems like a great bet.

68 to 1 ratio as I type. Silver has a long row to hoe -respect wise.

Not knocking silver, but I'm all gold. They don't call it the precious metal for nothing.

I just started my PM investiment last year and have just few ounces of Gold and couple hundreds of Silver with a ratio (at today's spot) of Au 54% - Ag 46%.
    By weight it's close to 60:1 (Ag/Au)

I'll have one question, if you don't mind.

What do you include in your count? I have some Britannias, some Pamp or Suisse bars, one gold UHR, etc...all demand a higher premium.
Would you count them in or you split what is your "collection" from your "investiment"?

I would not include them in your ratio's....not bullion in my opinion, but numismatic items.

Week before last I bought my first 1 oz. gold Eagle. I'm hooked on Gold now, but there's one little problem.....they want money for gold and all my money is tied up in that 1 coin for now.

I don't have much pure silver bullion, I do the 90% thing adding here and there. Like alot of folks on this board, I think silver has stayed too cheap for too long and think it's a good bet. Storage is not an issue for me.

The only silver I have is incidental to my 7070, a couple of Barber Halves, and some Silver IKEs and Commems. I've only been purchasing gold lately.

    This hurt my head image

Checking my excel for weight, dropping in today's spot prices, figuring out a total $ figure, and then figuring out the % for each metal.

If my math is right it comes out to about 75% of the total in gold, 25% of the total silver.

Ok, 23 votes in so far and there seems to be no "correct" allocation ratio. I cannot believe just how evenly spread the votes are so far! Seems to be more a matter of personal preference at this point rather than based on some sort of industry standard. I think I will try to bring my 80/20 closer to 70/30 just to hedge a bit. Although gold and silver often move up and down in lockstep, we all saw what happened yesterday!

I was at 90/10 Au/Ag until a few weeks ago.

    Now around 80/20.

Heading for 70/30 which seems best for portability/potential returns.

Gecko, this is a great thread because I have been in conversion mode (numismatic into bullion) and it's good to see the great minds here sharing.

Based on value I am 80/20 in favor of gold. Silver is becoming less important as all of my additional purchases will be gold.

For every oz of gold I have 13 oz of silver. Nothing I planned on, it just worked out that way. I'm happy with it.

Ok I agree with weis, this was too much work. But I was interested, so I came out 68% gold and 32% silver. all bullion.
