OT...How secure is your home?

I have never heard of this before today. Very disturbing indeed. Apparently its becoming a very well known technique to get into people's homes easily. Do you guys see this as a serious problem, or just another media scare tactic? Im considering laying down a decent amount of cash to have all 8 of my locks replaced. Will you be doing the same?

I saw that a few years ago. Dont think it would work on my house old house though. The front doors are about 4 - 5 inches thick and they deadbolt both top and bottom into the frame. You would laugh if you saw the key though - Old skeleton key. Locks have not been changed in my house in over 100+ years.

Security 110 lb Cheasapeake that does not take kindly to strangers. Plus I live next to a firehall which I like especially living in an older house. And except for a week or two worth of recent purchases nothing of notable value is here.

Lock bumping has been around for at least a coupe of decades in the magic/escapology circles.

As far as home invasion without detection, windows are the easiest followed by sliding glass doors. Sliding glass doors take a lot of time whereas the windows are done in seconds. If you have been specifically targeted then upgrading locks won't matter much.

FWIW, I had not heard about it in the criminal context.

Yesterday I was chatting with a neighbor about motion detector flood lights. He was looking at a solar powered unit. I suggested that since it's for security purposes and not just for letting the dogs out that he would be better off going with a hard wired unit instead- just in case.

And then it dawned on me...

This guy has a three car garage but four cars. One is always parked in the driveway all night. Guess what is on the visor?

I've heard of it before. They don't mention the security systems manufactured by Sigarms.....I guess because the guy they were interviewing doesn't sell them. --Jerry

Guns for protection of your home are rarely of any use while the house is empty, but I do have a couple of "lead dispersal" units here for the times when me or the wife ARE at home!

I have an imposing looking bullmastiff named Alabama. However, unless I'm being robbed by a giant ice cream cone Alabama isn't going to help much.....lead, premium locks, alarms and a SDB for me............MJ

I've heard about this long ago. Most likely b/c I was interested in the locksmith trade. I even have a small key making machine that I fiddle with from time to time. My house is safe when I'm home as I have a bunch of these hot lead throwing devices laying around and there is always one within an arms reach of me. Not so much when I'm gone as the windows/doors/locks on the house aren't very secure. Doesn't matter, When I'm gone I take everything I care about with me...My family. They can have the rest if they want it that bad. I live in a very small town and I know all my neighbors Very well so we all watch out for each other.

Bumping has been around for a long time. Learned it many years ago when I was taking a locksmith course. Every once in a while the media revives it to cause a bit of sensation. It really is not as simple as it looks, unless you practice it. A good lock picker is about as fast. Cheers, RickO

Not quite, professionals can "cut" a key to any lock in a few minutes with a small file and a blank key. Ask the Watergate burglars.image

I had this done two years ago when I locked myself out and the local locksmith was able to open my door in 30 secs with no effort at all. Wow was that an eye opener. I had all the locks upgraded with pump and pick proof locks and had interal only dead bolts installed for when we are at home. If they really want to get in they will, but damn it I am not going to make it easy for them! image
