For those of you still inquiring about the disposition of my GSA collection.

Perhaps this is the time and the best place to address the issue, so here goes.

As many of you are aware, my toned Morgan collection and my GSA collection were offered for sale to Legend Numismatics back in late February. Because Legend felt they didn't have the expertise to properly evaulate my extensive GSA collection, they invited GSA specialist Doug Sharpe to accompany them.

After reviewing both collections, Legend and I reached agreement on the purchase of my toned Morgan collection. Doug Sharpe and I could not reach agreement on the sale of the GSA collection and so I opted to retain it. I did however sell a few pieces to him so that his trip would not be vain.

In the subsequent days Legend published their news release containing a minor error which Laura quickly corrected for me. Some weeks later other questions arose re a client email that was sent out by Aspen Coin (Doug Sharpe). Once this was brought to my attention I contacted Doug and believe those issues have now been fully addressed and resolved.

My GSA collection is quite extensive and I've decided to market it over a period of time as opposed to doing an outright sale to a single buyer. Those interested can contact me with specific questions or requests for information on the collection.

Phase I of the sale is now in progress! As an initial market test, I selected forum member Mr. D (greattoning) to photograph and post selected coins on his ebay website. Most of these coins have not seen the light of day for 15 years or more! I've been very pleased with the results to date and will continue to use his services for select coins.

If you wanted to clear up confusion, that's more than fine, and this is the appropriate place. But I think once you added the above elements to your post, it becomes spam and should be taken to the BST.

Fair question. Our hobby is so small that it's about impossible to keep a secret. Greattoning didn't even know who the coins were from as I had them submitted through a prominent East Coast collector.

I did so at the time because the first coins that were sent to him were really just a test run to see how'd they'd do. I've not done shows for a number of years nor had I really paid much attention to ebay. In the event things didn't work out to my satisfaction, I didn't want to give collectors mixed signals about my intentions. After a number of weeks of sales I'm confident that for select coins from my collection, using Greattoning's services will be a reasonable way to find new homes for them.

As the saying goes, we don't really own our rare coins, we merely care for them for a while until the next owner comes along. It had gotten to the point where I'd not even looked at my collection for a couple of years. That's just not right.

There was also the issue of storing such a sizeable collection as not all of it consists of coins. I spend a lot of time out of the country these days and I decided that leaving such a collection for my wife to tend to is an unfair burden on her.

And finally, in the event of my untimely death, leaving such a collection for her to attempt to sell would be really unfair to her. No one knows the collection or its value like I do. Better that I sell it for fair market value than, well, you understand.

Another excellent question.

As many of you are aware, very few of the toned Morgans I sold to Legend were graded. Yes, most had been graded at one time, but I cracked them out of their TPGS holders and displayed them in Capital Plastics holders that I designed myself.

First off, someone else's opinion of a coin's grade was never important to me. I either liked the coin or I didn't. I just never felt I needed someone to tell me how to grade/value the coins and to be honest with you, I found the issue of grade was often a distraction. Why? Well, because beautifully toned coins sell for multiples of their value re grade. So what if the coin is a 65 or a 66 if it's value is 10 times sheet? Does the 65 or 66 really matter in such cases? For me, the grade is useless in those instances.

Also, I enjoyed having collectors look at my coins for hours on end at shows and the issue of the coin's grade NEVER entering into the conversation......it was all about the colors, the luster, the toning process, the GSA sale.......nothing about the grade.

Our hobby spends too much time and emotional energy worrying about grade IMHO.

Indeed. Often the only common thing about the coin is the date. The colors are what make the coin.

The first FUN show I attended was in 2003 and was quickly overwhelmed from looking at coin after coin either entombed in plastic or raw in a flip. I stumbled across a table with this strange looking guy with coins in large plastic holders. I spent the better part of an hour admiring his Morgans and their presentation. I thought to myself this guy is really a collector and has some spectacular Morgans. On top of the that he may be misguided in some areas but is one helluva nice guy too. Viewing his collection was one of the highlights of attending the show.

Anyone who saw this collection knows what I am saying, congratulations on the sale and ongoing sale of your coins and best of luck Brian.

Well said as far as grades go on toners. Aside from coins with obvious large visible marks all the plusses and CAC stickers and the rest of that nonsense doesnt mean anything with these coins. Good luck with your sales!
