Done with the Morgans

kazkaz Posts: 9,280 ✭✭✭✭✭
Try as I might, I could just never get into building a set of Morgans. My heart seems to be in odd stuff like crusty Trade Dollars and Seated Libs. But how could I just ignore the quintessential American Collectible Coin? I decided my Morgan Type set would consist of (1) toned coin and (1) DMPL coin.
As luck would have it, I won an example of each from 2 different auctions on the the eBay site of our very own Airplanenut (Jeremy). I am now sated, complete. At least for this series.image

    Morgans...you can either love'em or hate'em.

Perhaps you've found the perfect compromise.

I'm with you, Kaz. Not a fan. But I am still compelled to have a few in my collection along with a key date or two.

You have to admit, they can have remarkable beauty. Wonderful strikes, brilliant finishes, amazing colors. Such variety.

I have fiddled with Morgans off and on over the years. After starting a one a year collection twice and then losing interest in on it, I now have two Morgan sets both in "old time" Capital Plastics holders. I have a set of Morgan dollars from each mint (P, D, O, CC and S), and set of 1878 varieties (8 tail feather, 7/8 tail feather, 7 tail feather, 1878-CC, 1878-S) plus the rounded breast feather piece of 1878, which is not in the Capital holder.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Great examples!

  • That would be a Morgan i would like. That toner is nice.

Thanks for the remarks. Bill Jones' sets sound neat. My problem is, when I get into a series, it's hard for me to figure out where to stop! (I'm sure no one here has had the same problem, LOL). The Morgan series offers a huge number of possibilities for "sets within sets"--- I think it would be neat to hear how some other folks have decided to narrow their collecting focus within this very large group of coins.

I have always liked Morgans, and still do. The only series I have done is the CC series. I have some nice GSA specimens and other random dates I selected for the quality of the strike or some other significant factor. Cheers, RickO

While there are other terrific coins to collect- before you say you are done, consider buying a Morgan from each mint- add an S and and an O- consider a 1921-D as the 1921 date- then look for a Hot lips 1888-O-

This is just a friendly suggestion- then your Morgan collection would feature one coin form each mint and what many consider to be the most obvious obverse double die of the series
