Where do you buy or get, most of your collector coins from?

BearBear Posts: 18,953 ✭✭✭
From dealers in the circle of trust.

A few from known collectors, on B/S/T.

They could be nice or nasty, whatever you happen to collect. If you collect both kinds
of coins, then where do you get most of each type of coin from.

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

Heritage auction wins make up the most number of collector coins for me.
    Second would be eBay.
Third would be the US mint.

On line dealers....I travel int'l an awful lot and can't get to many major shows and they are my eyes and ears. Plus, I enjoy the relationships built with them. That is worth something to me. I pay for the years of experience and expertise that they bring to the dance. I figure I pay a little more upfront this way but I should be ok in the end.....JMHO. MJ

From a middle man. A buyer or finder, whatever you wish to call it. I deal only with one person. So much easier and painless that way.

I buy from many sources. My next coin could come from Teletrade, Ebay, online dealer, MFD, online auctions or somewhere else. But, most of my coins, about 20%, have come from Heritage Auctions.

The vast majority of my coins have been purchased from coin dealers at a major show bourse. Next, I’ve bought coins from dealer at brick and mortar stores. Finally there is the U.S. mint although I’ve stopped buying stuff like annual Proof sets because I’ve had quality issues. Now I go to a local dealer who lets me cherry pick sets for a reasonable mark-up over the issue price.

I’ve purchased almost nothing from collectors. That was true even when I was a dealer. Most collectors are too attached to their stuff, and it’s hard to do business with many of them.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Coin show dealers - generally ones who have no Internet presence.

almost all of my coins originally came from the US Mint image

but now i buy them from dealer's at shows, off dealer websites and ebay too (as long as there is a return privilege). Will also buy from the major coin auctions as long as I can get to Lot viewing and/or have someone take a look at the coins for me in advance if it's something I really want to bid on image
  • Private sales from a couple dealers and Heritage Auctions.
