1877 S Trade $ 7 chopmarks, need opinions please

Hello all, I know that there are a couple of guys who collect the Trade $ with chopmarks, I just cant remember who they are. I am looking for opinions on this coin. I believe it to be genuine, however one dealer tells me it is probably fake because of the chop marks.

Is it normal to have multiple chopmarks on a coin? As far as diagnostics go it is a real as far as I can tell? Have any of you seen these type of chopmarks? Can chopmarks be traced to a specific company?

Lots of questions, but I know the knowledge exists on these boards.

Thanks in advance

It's definately been cleaned ... and definately is misshappen from the chops ... but it looks real to me

I am not any type of expert on this series though, and would not be able to tell you the diagnostics other than diameter and weight to authenticate.

Hopefully one of the real Trade Dollar experts will chime in ...

Is it normal to have multiple chopmarks on a coin? Well, it can happen with up to at least 31 chops on a coin. The below I have shown multiple times and is in a PCGS F15 holder-

Real, VF20 details Harshly cleaned. Yes some of the chops can be found repeated and traced back to a port / bank/ Provence. Think of them as a tax receipt on the bullion, it showed that they passed though the proper hands on their way out. There is an out of print book on chops that can be found for a price on ebay and larger shows but I forget the author

I agree, genuine and Vf details. Some interesting chop designs. My personal opinion: I would not want a coin that is harshly cleaned and extremely bright, as this one appears. and, they aren't rare, so you can wait for a better looking one to come along.

As stated and demonstrated, there can be multiple chops on a coin. The book you want is Chopmarks, by F.M. Rose. I do not like that example... there are many others, in better condition. Cheers, RickO

AU50 details (cleaned/dipped)... The chops appear to be from South East Asia, from Singapore or Malaysia.
