  • Not mint bag color (mint bag color--as we know it from morgans--is rarely seen on peace dollars). That piece likely toned in an old leather purse or cigar box.

Usually the seam leaves a distinct textured stripe. I don't think that is from the seam of a canvas bag.

  • Thanks for that , its much prettier in hand , the pics pick up the darkness rather than the lighter colors.
  • No, and I'd give that one a thorough bath in acetone.

Dont think so , theres toner fans out there that might like even the ugliest of ducklings , there will be no bath.

Looks like it could win most any "ugly" contest, imho.

The pics show a greenish tint that I would be concerned about.
  • Not the most attractive coin I have ever seen but if you like it.....image

    acetone will not remove toning

    but will remove PVC contamination

your pictures show what could be green bubbles of PVC in a couple places

The PVC will eat away at your coin surface making pits and cause your coin to lose value

To the left of the R in LIBERTY on onverse
and around rock perch on reverse are areas of my concern

look at your coin from 45 degree angle and see if color is flat like toning
or raised bubble of green plastic acid wrecking your coin

I've heard this before. I have only dipped one toned coin in acetone -- a seated quarter -- and the tone was instantly dissolved away. So I'm a little confused on this topic.

Good luck with that mind set scenario... common date, at best low MS coin with possible PVC contamination. You should reconsider either a "dip" or acetone bath.

  • Acetone is flammable, so do this outdoors. It will quickly dissolve/soften most plastics, so I recommend a shallow vessel made of glass. Acetone will remove PVC (sometimes it takes prolonged immersion to do this), but may expose underlying surface damage (pitting/etching covered by greenish PVC goo). The damage occurs because PVC breakdown releases hydrochloric acid, which etches the metal surface. Organic dyes used to artificially tone some coins will also be removed, but not real toning (due to surfaces oxides, carbonates, sulfides, etc.).

It's not toning; it's PVC damage and if left as it is will make this a $15 coin.

    ...mint bag toning...

I was not aware that they toned much -- I guess the dirt and slow oxidation could be called toning.... But will they slab? Is there a "register set" for toned mint bags?

False. Acetone removes inorganic material. Toning due to age is organic and will NOT be removed or dissolved by acetone. It's likely the quarter was AT'd or had something on the surface of the coin that was removed and not actual toning. I've dipped several coins in acetone and never had negative results. The only time anything was ever removed was when I dropped a truly AT Franklin in it and the coin became dull.

I think you are correct. Once the toning was removed I noticed some staining. I think some lowlife doctor tried covering it up.
