Premiums for silver halves?

When selling as bullion, do people generally ask for a premium for walkers or Franklins (VG-F grade commons) over, say, 1964 Kennedies? Do silver halves generally go at spot, or above or below?

When selling as bullion, no distinction is made for the above 3. They all go in the same pot. As to question # 2, it all depends who you're selling to, if a bullion dealer, below spot..on the BST or eBay, slightly above spot. When buying, expect to pay above spot...somebody needs to make a profit. image

There are some strictly bullion dealers and stackers that much prefer Kennedys over Franklins and Walkers. The theory being that the 90% Kennedys have more of their true content due to being pulled from circulation by people who hoarded due to the coin featuring a recently assassinated president, hoarding due to a change in the series from Franklin to Kennedy and hoarding in 1965 due to the change in silver content. Less circulation means less wear which means more silver content.

Agree with Robb. At this point, for me, I'd be just as interested in VF-XF walkers as I would in AU/BU kennedys. So of course in a perfect world, it would be buying AU/BU walkers at melt image

We accumulate junk silver over the counter in dimes, quarters and halves, sort it and count it. As a rule we do not pay a premium for halves.

The other day I ran the bucket and came up with about $200 in halves, $100 in quarters and $70 in dimes. The next day a guy came in and asked if we had any junk silver for sale. We quoted him a price for the lot and he took it.

Had he said he only wanted the halves, we would have charged a slightly higher rate, perhaps another .2 times face. Since he took everything, we charged him our standard markup.

my local store charges the same for halves, quarts, and dimes unless they are barbers or standing liberty quarters.

However I would say that WLHs get sold much faster and are very desirable. Even here on the boards, I notice that WLHs are picked up faster than any other 90%

  • I get a good bulk of my 90% halves from ebay (as well as the BST if gsa1fan does not beat me to itimage) and it seems the Franklin lots usually get bid higher than the Walkers and Kennedy's. If you are patient and look at a ton of auctions you can usually get them from $11-$12 face
