Dipping Gold?

Hi folks,

I'm not a huge fan of dipping coins myself but feel it would really help a Liberty Double Eagle I have here. My question is just whether dipping Gold causes any particular problems - assuming of course the coin is properly rinsed/dipped/etc. (I've dipped many silver coins without problems). Is there anything that needs to be done differently with gold?

    I've seen a fair number of silver coins that have been helped by a dip. However, I've seen very few examples where gold has been helped. It usually results in a washed out light gold colored coins instead of that rich orangish/gold color seen on original gold.

    I'll add a question to this one; is there anyway to get rid of a fingerprint on gold? Acetone?

    I've never tried it but I hear Windex has been used on Gold.

    A little ms 70 probably won't hurt, dilute with water otherwise you have to use quite a bit of distilled water to remove the remnants when you rinse it-----------BigE

    Sure, it does. It makes the coin look like it has been dipped. That's a problem!

    The good thing about dipping coins is reducing the value which makes them more affordable if you can stomach the Genny.

    I own a 1924 Saint NGC MS61 that's one of my favourite coins. It's nice and bright as the day it was minted and that's what I like about it. It's very obvious it has been dipped. I have other Saints like a PCGS 1912 MS64 that's dingy dirty that I don't care much about as well as the 1924.

    Does CAC ever sticker cleaned coins?

    Are you saying that PCGS won't grade coins that have been dipped?image

    Just dip it. For the most part, fingerprints can be removed from gold, since the print is not etched into the gold. That being said, if it has high copper content, there will be a problem. Cheers, RickO

    Why do you want to dip this coin? Does it have copper spots that are unsightly or is it just dirty? Got any pics?

    If he sells at wholesale and buys at retail, he loses money. That's a problem for most of us.

    I know a few dealers that swear by sudsy ammonia and others that swear by lemon juice.

    as ridiculous as it sounds, my old boss would have me dip stuff like k-rands and Maples to remove the haze that sometimes developed from long storage. even though they were just "bullion" the buyers always chose the best looking, brightest pieces.

    it didn't mean more money, just an easier sale.

    Those shipwreck coins look hideous in my opinion. I wish they marketed them just as found and I would own one.

    I would try sending it to get conserved.

    I also have heard about windex, amonia, mr clean, and ms70 working on gold coins

    The company that conserves coins is not the answer(I won't name them). Gold coins done by them have a greasy un-natural look and are very easy to spot once you have seen one. Leave gold as is with the exception of acetone and it will be as good as it gets.
