This downhill snowboarding with these guys wearing JEANS is a joke! If they want to be taken seriously, they need to dress like an athlete...

if the game is judged not who scores more or runs fastest, then its not a sport its an event or activity, ie figure skating. not that the competitors aren't athletes but to have someone judge who is better with their subjective decision doesn't prove who won or is best

    just my thought

    Amazingly I agree.

    Me too.
  • FWIW, the snowboarders and skiiers are not wearing jeans but rather gortex suits designed to look like distressed jeans. Not that it matters, they still look like clowns. I wonder how much money was wasted on that concept.

I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that I like the pants. Seems to fit in with the mentality that drew these athletes into snowboarding in the first place.
  • A couple of things...as has already been noted, these aren't jeans, but instead a pretty high tech composite that is meant to look like jeans. Second, these were designed by the official team sponsor, Burton, so if you want to complain about anyone, complain about the team sponsor making them look like jeans, not the athletes who are there on the sponsor's dime. It seems the original poster has many more issues with snowboarders than the fact they were wearing pants that looked like jeans.

To suggest that these guys aren't athletes and that snowboarding isn't a sport to me, at least, suggests ignorance. Watch them compete, watch the amazing technical skill and athleticism that is required to pull off the stuff they are doing, and to do it as effortlessly as they make it seem. You want to knock them for daring to dress a little differently? I suppose that's your right, but they are incredible, amazing athletes.

Agreed. I'd also add that in general I think adding these X-game sports to the Winter Olympics was a good idea. There's only so much long-jump skiing or rigged figure skating competitions that a man can watch. Of course, I'm one of those people who watch about 40 hrs. of coverage every time this rolls around so I might be more sensitive to dull programming than your average bear.

Because a foul call, holding penalty and strike zone aren't subjective?

  • I think it is great to have snowboarding and the other "X" styled events included. It takes a lot of talent and skill to do what they do. Why shouldn't they be allowed to use their talents to represent the country? Whether you like the attire or not it is a very popular sport and the IOC is very smart for incorporating the events in the Olympic games. I would certainly rather watch it than a bunch of dudes seeing how far they can jump off a ramp on skis. Not to beat a dead horse but they are not wearing jeans. If you have ever been on a slope you know that wearing jeans would be stupid. They would saturate and you would freeze.

I think at the end of the day refusal to accept the sport is a product of the IOC ignoring snowboarding while the rest of the world was embracing it. Had the IOC incorporated snowboarding in the program before the days of the X-Games it would probably be more embraced. Since the X-Games concept was born a lot of folks probably get turned off by the "Rock Star" mentality associated with the sport.

I am a 40-something year old guy who does not snowboard but I love the x-game events being in the Olympics. I think it's great. However, to agree with what Fandango said (which I do not normally do) that there is no need to wear jeans like pants. They could do better than that. This is the Olympics so dress like it! Having said that, I should add that I do not like the US uniforms, in other sports either, this year at the Olympics. Usually I find it obvious which are the Americans. This year it took a few days. Also, I do not plan to agree with Fandango ever again so archive it!

  • I'm surprised nobody has said that Shaun White needs to cut his hair! I think that as evidenced by this thread, no matter how much they try and push these sports athletes into the mainstream they will always be a part of the "counter culture." Fine by me, I prefer it that way image

    Anyways.....

I don't mind the current ones, but I liked these better:

  • You guys are being way too hard on the winter Olympics.

By the way, did you check out the snow shoveling competition? Couldn't believe the Norwegian team cleared that driveway and shaved almost 20 seconds off the previous world record. Simply amazing.
