I took the plunge...........

and bought a 2010 sealed Green Monster of 500 ASEs from APMEX. I know I should have done it yesterday when silver was $0.25 less than today but......oh well. I pulled the trigger anyway. I was torn as whether to buy the ASEs or #50, 10oz bars or #5 x100 oz bars or a $1000 bag of junk silver. I kind of wanted the $1000 bag but was concerned about "slicks" comprising the majority of coins and also concerned about the buy back less than spot. Same on the bars, selling ahead of spot and buying behind spot.

Whatever happened to buying bars and junk silver at spot and giving up 5-6% at sell?

My per price on the 2010 sealed Monster with APMEX was $18.69. I didn't see any better pricing anywhere including Tulving.

Best regards,

    nice!

If it was me, I would have used that money to get some gold, many rolls of ASEs, many 10 oz bars, many 1 oz bars/rounds, 5 oz bars, and 90% silver. I like diversity image

Plus seeing as you have kids, you could get your kid interested and show him all the silver you have, a monster box of ASEs is just boring image

I would have gone for the $1000 bag of 90% if it was a decent price. I'm sure the premium you paid for silver eagles was substantially more than any premium that was being charged on the 90%. and even if they were all slick you wouldn't really be losing that much silver, maybe a few ounces over the entire bag. and from what I've seen on the forum here, 90% is pretty easy to sell to forum members expense free at or even slightly above melt prices. There's no reason that you would have had to sell to a dealer for less.

You could also stop by your local coin store and if they allow you, pick out all the nicer 90%.

My local store has the 90% in tupperware containers and I go through them and pick out the nicer coins and leave the slicks and dinged up ones for others imageimage

Good call on the green monster. You chose wisely IMHO.

Yep, monster is a fine choice that has a larger market than bars.

  • Thanks for the input guys. Was my first post to the PM forum. After beating my head against the wall with indecision this past weekend, and not pulling the trigger @ $16.23 per oz, I'm pretty content with the purchase. I sold my all of generic Saints last December when premiums were higher in order to buy more silver. My silver holdings are well diversified in multiple 10 oz bars, 100 oz bars, $750 face in junk halves and now the Monster. All good.

The temptation now is to resist opening the sealed box!

    Thanks again!

haha, capthenway, I only buy a little bit, so don't think I am taking all the good stuff and leaving the bad. If the tupperware bin has lets say 100 FV of mercs, I will only buy like 2 fv so there is still lots of nice stuff for others.

And people on here lose sleep worrying that dealers are cherrypicking solid rolls of silver eagles...........

nice pickup. You won't be sad you too the plunge with the price you paid for that monster box. If I had the dough, I'd buy 1 monster box and $1000 face 90% every year. Can't go wrong with either of those two.

Thats what I do, take out the better dates and xf-au walkers and mercs and leave the scrubs for someone else but I have to quit buying soon as I have roughly $8,000 face of 90%. image

What difference does it make as long as he pays the owner the posted price and he lets him do it??? The two stores I go to let me do this all the time, of course it helps if you spend enough money to make it worth their while.
