Silver Eagles

ajmanajman Posts: 1,359 ✭✭✭
Can anyone point me in the right direction of where I can buy a roll of silver eagles or any silver bullion roll that "HAS NOT" been cherrypicked? Anyone on eBay or the BST? I would appreciate some serious comments please. Tony

  • Cherry picked? Common bullion coins? I just dont get it.

  • Why not just buy a few "new" rolls from APMEX.com? If you wait and get 2010 dated rolls straight from a monster box, you can be sure APMEX didn't bother to open them.

I don't get why dealers cherry pick bullion rolls either, but they do. There are several threads that complain that Apmex among others that do it. All I want is an unsearched roll that I can throw in the SDB and not worry that some schmuck has put his dirty little paws on them to try to get some 69's or 70's for grading.

  • If your throwing them in the SDB, why would you care about any grade at all image

I bought several rolls last year on eBay - from different sellers - and have always found nice coins. You may rinse them in acetone before you put in your SDB, if you are afraid of fingerprints.
The seller "midyatspor1000" has always a lot of Silver Eagles for sale. I do not think they search all the rolls they sell. I had good experiences with them.

Thanks Ciccio, I appreciate your opinion, unlike others that always seem to challenge every comment made.

I've also had good luck with Ebay. The roll I got was still sealed. That being said, I couldn't resist opening it up and looking at the first couple.

How you tell if they are still sealed? Is the top glued shut?

Me too. I hate people touching my coins, even "bullion". I mean, if you're going to touch coins, do it by the edges only, and so many violate this basic tenet of collecting.

By the way, I agree this is a thoroughly valid topic .....

They don't come from the mint sealed except for green monster boxes, I was just asking for opinions for any possible honest sellers out there that sell untampered with rolls. If there is any such seller I would like to buy from them even if there is a premium on the roll. And it seems to me that if enough collectors giving kudos to a specific seller with positive results, that is someone I'd be interested in buying from. I'm not trying to be unreasonable, it's just that I'm very particular about how I acquire bullion, be it silver, gold, or platinum.

With the thousands of rolls APMEX sells every month, I have a hard time believing they open each roll of bullion coins and search through them looking for??

They deal with millions of SAE every year. The skilled labor involved in evaluating these coins would cost far more than any gain would justify.

I agree. If you buy a complete roll, I doubt APMEX is looking at them.

We buy sealed green boxes and sell them either as solid rolls that we do not bother to cherrypick or as singles that we put in capsules.

I suppose that the telehores who do send in many sealed cases to the bulk graders must re-roll the rejects and sell them through some other outlet. Stay away from people who deal primarily in slabbed bullion who just happen to have some common bullion at a slightly reduced price and you should be OK.

I can assure you that apmex or any other company that has inventory/sells graded bullion eagles, does cherrypick their rolls.

I also hate that, but it is the nature of the beast ... the best way is to get your own monster box, or go in part with someone else, if you can't afford the whole thing.

If one were to buy a monster box from APMEX, would it be sealed from the Mint? Where is the best place (cheapest over spot & sealed) to buy a monster box? Thx

Common sense tells me that not be cost effective...However, as much as Apmex does sell individual ASE's that need to be taken from Rolls, I'm sure those rolls are randomly searched for submission purposes. On the other hand, searching through every roll (probably hundreds or maybe thousands) is to labor intensive to realize a profit from any coin that may grade a 70. Most bullion ASE's, 2008 & 2009, graded 70 (PCGS or NGC) can be had for $75-$90, and I suspect that will hold true for the 2010 bullion ASE.

i think you can buy nice rolls of ASE's on Ebay, i sure have

don't buy them for grading buy them for bullion.

you can always rinse in acetone or even dip them for a second or two, put them in an air-tite or back into their roll.

i wouldn't spend a premium to get them.

they are very pretty when pristine but when it comes time to "use" them if need be, it won't matter if they have a spot or two or "salsa' colors.

Tulving sells unopened Green Monster Boxes, but they also sell "any date" solid rolls that have evidently been searched at one time or another (and they are $0.20 cheaper per coin).

For single rolls, less than Green Monster Box quantities, I'd go with Capt. Henway, see above post. If he hasn't looked at them, then he hasn't.

I bought an unopened Green Monster Box in 2003, and couldn't stand the suspense, so I opened it and then I opened the center roll. Boy, are those coins nice when they're new! That was 6 years ago and I haven't looked again since.
