Herschel Walker set to make MMA debut

MMA Weekly has the fight listed for the 30th of January on Showtime. Dont yet know who he will be fighting though.

Comments

  • Making an MMA debut at age 48 is beyond unbelievable. What scares me is that he has DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder) aka Multiple Personality Disorder, which could prove to be deadly if the wrong HW decides to show up for a fight!

    Just a thought!

Very strange if you ask me, 48 years old? IMO he would be better trying to make an NFL comeback image

Too pathetic for words - can't Herschel do something safer for an adrenaline rush thrill like maybe competing in some senior bobsled competition? LOL

A 48 year old man getting pounded on the head with hard punches really is a bad idea if ya wanna live a long quality life.

I credit it to his time spent on the Eagles. He left there, never mentally the same.

    Sad.

    ............................

When HW "swore" to Vince Dooley that he was NOT going to
sign with the USFL, he had already penned the deal.

LOTS of UGA folks never got over that.

I thought it was sad too until I saw this video. He's a freak, is in amazing shape, is training with the best and getting good advice. He would have walked if they told him to (no pun intended). He's doing it for charity too.

Herschel is a great guy. If the only thing you know about him is that he played for the Cowboys and he has multiple personality disorder, then you don't really know him. Always been a class act and I'm proud that he's doing what he's doing, to show whats possible for seniors near 50. I hope he wins.

This is what I meant earlier about people not really knowing who Herschel is. He's practically the definition of discipline. Guys like that don't go broke....

  • I don't watch MMA. Is there a "code" of respect like they have like in hockey fighting ? In other words, there are just
some things you just don't do to respect the other fighter.

Maybe he is. Then he will look better if he loses to his no-name opponent.

he might need money, but MMA doesn't pay money like boxing does.. i'm sure Herschel will make bank tonight, simply because of his name, but it wont be millions like a boxer would get..

he should win this fight easily tonight, his opponent seems hand-picked for him (as it should be)..

  • "he should win this fight easily tonight, his opponent seems hand-picked for him (as it should be).. "

Agreed. Much better thought out match-up than Canseco/HMC. Plus I tend to think that Hershel is taking this a tad more seriously than Canseco did. However, the best fight tonight is gonna be Ruthless Robby VS Marvelous Melvin...talk about a dream match-up of brutal KO sluggers!!!!

Having your head pounded in during a fight has as much to do with your opponent than your age or ability. There is a reason why Walker is the heavy favorite

I wonder if Herschel ever started lifting weights.
  • Upset of the Year tonight - Wes Sims beats Bobby Lashley as a huge dog - last I saw Lashley was 15/1...

  • << <i>Upset of the Year tonight - Wes Sims beats Bobby Lashley as a huge dog - last I saw Lashley was 15/1... >>

Sims couldnt beat his way out of a wet paper bag. But it DOES have that Seth Petruzilli aura to it, doesnt it? Wonder if they'll go into Wes' locker room tonight just before the fight and tell him to keep it on the feet for an extra $15k?
  • I hope heavyweight boxing makes a comeback. I miss the rumbles in the jungles. mma just doesnt do it for me.

  • << <i>I hope heavyweight boxing makes a comeback. I miss the rumbles in the jungles. mma just doesnt do it for me. >>

Then why in the hell are you posting in an MMA thread? Thats like me coming in and posting "Gosh, I miss using a 1-900 chatline to talk with different people, web forums just dont do it for me".
Take a hike if it doesnt interest you.

    Says who? You?

Walker is an ex football player so therefore it makes it interesting.

They might not want that if they're trying to protect Lashley - Sims is 6'10" with a giant reach, and even though he does the fake stuff Lashley does have a solid wrestling background. He will probably take Sims down then pound him, BUT -Sims has to be embarassed after his ugly showing on the last Ultimate Fighter. If he'd been training before taking the fight on short notice (a big if) he has the experience to pull it off...

my other predictions - Zaromskis over Diaz ( but I root for Diaz)
    cyborg over the other chick
Manhoef over Lawler ( I'll be rooting for Lawler)
    Walker over the jobber
    Hieron over Riggs

I got Diaz , Cyborg over any woman on earth at 147, Lawler, Lashley, Walker, and Riggs (such a shame this wont be televised).

  • << <i>and Riggs (such a shame this wont be televised). >>

agreed - Riggs is always game even though thing haven't gone his way for a while - maybe the other fights will go quick and they'll show it delayed?
  • To no one's surprise, Walker wins

The chicks are putting on a better fight right now
    Tom
  • How bout that Bobby Lawler!!!!

I can't believe he needs the money, I think he needs the roar of a crowd and the excitement
    he can get by competing.

    But what do I know?

he doesnt need the money.. he is donating his entire purse to some charity.. he just likes testing himself.. just like he didnt need the money when he wanted to try bobsledding, or track & field or whatever else he's done..

like you said, he is a competitor..

You're right, Steve. Its the CHALLENGE that brings Walker out for things like this, NOT AT ALL that he needs money. I mentioned this earlier, but he owns a few businesses (a large food services company, and at one time he also owned a succesful car dealership). He doesn't need $ now, just like he didn't need $ when he joined the Olympic bobsled team after he retired from the NFL. He's just motivated and determined and still likes to prove people wrong.

I met him 2 years ago. A very nice man. I remember when he came over, I was looking at his T-shirt and thinking to myself he was in great shape. He didn't appear to have an ounce of fat on him. He was at a food conference and serving our group food. We all had a good time. Some people may have not loved his NFL career but there is no doubting he is one of the best athletes of all time.

Agreed. He's top 3 for greatest college football player of all time and if there was a category for general athleticism across all sports, he'd be at the top of that list too. He has created so much buzz for MMA, I bet his next fight gets a huge ratings boost for MMA.
