What's The Most Beautiful "Original" Modern US Gold Coin that doesn't use a previous design either totally or in part??? Remember, we all tend to like original-ity, don't we??image My first thought was the 1999 Washington, but that design dates back to the 1932 competition.

    1988 Olympic $5 ? (obverse)
  • I'll second that.
    1987 is also cool.

I'm surprised that no one mentioned the $5.00 Olympic gold with a Nike obverse (although I don't have one that I can post).

Actually, one of the more attractive modern coins, with originality, is the Sacagawea dollar. Cheers, RickO

The Columbus $5 commemorative gold piece is quite nice. In fact many of the modern $5 gold commemorative designs are nice … far better than the $10 gold piece (Dick and Jane (’84 Olympics) and the Wright Brothers) despite that fact that the designers had more space.

The biggest disappointment is the reverse of the Mt. Rushmore $5 gold. The obverse is great with the eagle flying by the monument with sculptors’ tools in its talons, but the reverse with nothing but words is a real bummer. The artist who designed that claimed he didn’t have the time to do any more. In that case he should have passed on the project and given the honor to someone who had the time to do it right.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

The OP was asking about gold coins. The Sac dollar is a golden coin.image

  • Since I can't pick the Andrew Jackson gold spouse because of the obverse I'll have to pick The Julia Tyler spouse. I really like the uncluttered but balanced designs of the two aforementioned coin reverses, and Julia comes off as a true beauty on the obverse. image

My first thought was of the Nike commem. The Washington is my favorite, but its obverse is by Fraser.

I really like the 2008 Bald Eagle $5 design. Both sides are well executed, which is
something of a rarity anymore... image

The 2007 Jamestown gets an honorable mention.

I still think the 2000 LOC is, far and away, the coolest modern commem, but it's not strictly gold.

Edit: Note to BillJones - I agree about the cheesiness of the 1984 Olympic obverse, but the reverse
is spectacular (one of the best eagles ever), IMO.
