Joseph Robinson was the Harry Ried of his day. He was the Senate majority leader during the early years of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency. As a reward for his service Robinson was slated to be one of the appointees to the Supreme Court when Roosevelt was looking to expand the size of that body in order to get more justices who would not oppose his programs. The deal was that Roosevelt would appoint Robinson to the Court in return for Robinson’s undivided support, as the Senate majority leader, for Roosevelt’s plan to pack the Supreme Court. Robinson died of a heart attack in his office before that plan had a chance to come to fruition. Ultimately it failed.
The Congress approved the Robinson – Arkansas half dollar while Robinson was still very much in office and still alive. It was an audacious move although it was not unprecedented. Calvin Coolidge was president when he appeared on the 1926 Sesquicentennial commemorative half dollar. Senator Carter Glass was alive, but very ill, when his portrait appeared on the Lynchburg commemorative half dollar.
This Robinson half dollar is a PCGS MS-64.

Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free
