RE: Billet7 doily holder census.

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have a simple question for anyone who has responded to the census with either a coin picture or just stating that they have a holdered coin; I've noticed that the forum tends to be populated by collectors who will sometimes buy/keep a holdered coin for reasons other than the coin, such as the holder generation or the possibility of financial enhancement when the coin gets cracked and upgraded. I'm curious, are the coins everyone has in the doily holders kept intact because they are properly/under graded and thus rendered to being a novelty??

I will add that I think I may have two doily holder coins.

The two I own I feel are properly graded. There is absolutely no reason to crack them out.

No grade issue with the one I have. I do like the holder though. Same with OGHs. --JErry
  • I have owned two before and the coins in both meant nothing to me....in the case of the doily's it was all about the holders image

I have one a walker, I keep it because my brother gave it to me as a gift 20 some years ago.

Of the collectors I know and talk with... it is the holder more than the coin. Cheers, RickO

Not to me. My two examples I feel are very nice for the grade and exhibit light original tone. Its just a bonus that they resdie in a doily holder.

The two I have are properly graded I think. Even if they went up a grade, there would not really be much of an up-side. I have them because I am putting together a PCGS generations set, that is an example for each kind holder ever produced by PCGS.

IMHO the only reason to crack a doily, is to submit a coin that is clearly undergraded...and has a big upside. Lots of undergraded coins get cracked, it doesn't matter if it's a "rattler," "doily" or "new blue."

The only doily holdered coin I currently have in my collection is a Liberty half-eagle. The coin was an ebay purchase and caught my eye because I was looking for bullion gold under melt in connection with the Bing (aka Live) program. The images were decent and the coin looked better than the assigned grade of MS62 so I purchased it. Upon receipt, I thought the coin was an MS63. Later, I had Mike Printz image the coin and his first comment to me was that he thought it was undergraded. CAC also agreed and assigned the coin a gold sticker. Greysheet in MS62 is $485 and in MS63 is $870.

I have no doily holdered coins but would really like an IKE in a doily holder for the pure "novelty" factor.

For me, it was owning an example of the holder. My 1960 proof nickel is graded PR64 if I remember correctly. Not a coin I would pursue normally.

thanks for the honest replies, gents. i suspected that the majority wanted the holder and not necessarily the coin inside of it.

I bought both of mine for three reasons:
    -The holder was neat
-The coins are very attractive and no less than solid for the grade
-The prices were more than reasonable

Except for an exceedingly rare slab (NGC black, for example), I wouldn't buy a coin I don't like because of the holder. If the coin is otherwise very nice, then I'm happy to buy it.

  • I was pleased to find any population information for the doily holder. How is a coin added to the population? The list was last updated in February 2024. We have a 1908 $10 Indian, PCGS MS61 CAC, cert 6197377, not on the list. In general is there a premium for the doily?

    1. Try posting on this thread, I think it is the main thread on the topic and DRUNNER or Lakesammman might be able to help https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/967317/the-new-doily-census-2016
    2. Yes, there is a very large premium for doily holders. I believe they are in the top 3 rarest PCGS holders, along with white label rattlers and regency holders.

Yes . . . . large premiums on the Doilies.

The Census has gone through three 'moderators'. It started with Billet7, then I took over, then Kelly (handle???) took over from me after I sold out. Interesting . . . all three guys from Utah within 25 miles of each other. Look at the Census . . post there, and Kelly will have your coins added to the Census almost immediately.

As soon as I sold out . . .the Doilies that I had brought out of obscurity shot up to 3x prices. Oh well . . .Revick, you scored a few thousand on me . . . . . :-)

    If you need anything specific on info . . . PM me . . . . . .

    This one went too cheap:

The auction never stated it was a Doily.

Some old familiar names in this thread? is Mike Printz still in the business? I've forgotten who he worked for back then.

Maybe a couple hundred too cheap. I sold a couple and they didn’t command a strong premium like one would think.

In my opinion only certain types of coins bring a serious premium for a Daily. Morgans and Walkers seem to bring the most from what I've seen. Gold tends to be right near where the price would be regardless.
