Regrade canidates?

Ok, I am still learning here and I thought this would be a great exercise to help me learn the jedi forces involved in grading coins. In my previous thread you guys helped me understand the OGH myth and if coins usually will get a better grade. So I thought I would put up a couple and see if you guys think they are better or worse. Please indicate why since I am still learning and would really appreciate any grading advice you can give.
The first set is the in a OGH PCGSms61. The second set is PCGS VF35. On the second one, I have (from my reading and recent learning about grading) think that it possibly could be bumped to a EF40. What do you guys think about them? You guys have always been awesome, thanks for your help!

The S-mint coin I could see maybe getting a bump to 62, but that's a crapshoot. It has a lot of tickmarks and I sort of agree with 61. I've seen worse in 62 holders a time or two, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. Gold's a soft metal, though, so one has to expect some marks in the lower MS grades. Who knows?

The CC-mint coin I personally wouldn't have graded as high as they did in the first place (VF35), let alone going 40 on it. I would never go 40 on that. Now, I do think they might have more lenient standards for CC coins, due to conditions that existed at that particular branch mint and so on, so I could be totally off-base. I'm not the one whose opinion counts, obviously.

But I say both are a good fit in the holders they have.

Not upgrade candidates at all, in my humble opinion, but I like both. What's not to like? They're gold, right? But I like the orangey toning on them and the overall look of the CC coin especially. Circulated gold has a nice look to it, and that's no exception. Both nice coins, regardless of their numerical grade.

Now, let's assume I am wrong and both coins were sent in and upgraded. The MS61 bumped to MS62 and the VF35 went to XF40. What then would have you gained? Not a whole lot, I reckon. Maybe not even enough to offset the expense of regrading them? (I don't know the price trends on these offhand).

I think they are both maxed out where there at. Nice coins but I see no upgrades there. The 92-S looks AU the way the fields are worn right up to the stars. I would just enjoy them as is. image

My opinion: The 1892-S looks like an AU and the 1879-CC looks like a VF-25.

Even if the 92-S were a solid 62, which it is not, it would not be worth the cost/effort.

The 79-CC looks like a nice VF coin and has no chance to upgrade, IMO.

I'd defer to RYK's opinion on the gold, for obvious reasons.

Which vindicates my original line of thought.

They're maxed out. Keep 'em in the holders they're in and enjoy 'em. They're not worth an upgrade attempt, but they're nice coins as-is.

I'd say that the chances for an up grade on either of those pieces are slim to none, and that the chances for a down grade, especially on the 1892-S half eagle are decent (or indecent if you would not like that result). I'd keep them right where they are.

The 91-S would not come back as MS61 today. It almost appears that it has in a benzel at one time with the hits that it has. The 79-CC definately has a better look to it.
  • Great comments. Grading is tough. It's good to know they are where they should be for the most part. I am happy with their current grades. I am sure all noobs get upgrade fever? lol. I really enjoy looking at them and I feel like I got good deals on both of them, whats not to like, right?

What has been especially helpful for you guys in learning how to spot the grade?

The 1892-S would almost certainly never make it any better than the 58-61 range due to the number of marks and the lack of luster. The 1879-CC is also just fine where it is with almost no shot at upgrading.
  • +1. I'm with everyone on this pair of coins.
