Used ammo boxes will impart AT to silver from the oils left in the boxes. I had used a box for half dollars and it toned them all. Some were nicely toned and most were just hideous. I just sold them. I had them in the box for about 5 years, maybe a bit longer. Some of the toning looked like "an oil drop in a puddle" would look. Be careful or steam clean the boxes first! bob

You have no idea what we keep in those cans... many are probably considered hazardous waste. I wouldn't use one without decontaminating it some how.

<< <i>I like tin paint cans. Get them clean, never used from home depot. Airtight lids with a large dessicant pack in each can. Good stuff. >>
Great tip. Best group of old rolls I ever bought were in old coffee cans. Pristine and fresh like the day they were minted, no toning from the paper or on the end coins. Tin paint cans would do the same thing. Plus they have handles are easy to open, big enough for a lot of stuff. Awesome.
PM me for coin photography equipment, or visit my website:
If the ammo cans ever had live ammo in them there will be very trace amounts of the compounds used in the gunpowder etc. There is your source of toning, albeit very ugly. I have ammo cans but I do not use them for coins! Only batteries go in ammo cans.

They are those silica gel packs that come in everything from some dried foods to electronic equipment.
I get plenty from the guys in the warehouse at work.

<< <i>I store ammo in my ammo cans.... that is their purpose. Coins and gold go in my safe, with large dessicant bags. Cheers, RickO >>
Same here - I store my coins in the vault
by my father and myself and the ones I open are all bright red.
