I like tin paint cans. Get them clean, never used from home depot. Airtight lids with a large dessicant pack in each can. Good stuff.
  • nah i use those to stroe my weed and cannibis...

Used ammo boxes will impart AT to silver from the oils left in the boxes.
I had used a box for half dollars and it toned them all. Some were nicely
toned and most were just hideous. I just sold them. I had them in the box
for about 5 years, maybe a bit longer. Some of the toning looked like "an
oil drop in a puddle" would look.
Be careful or steam clean the boxes first!

They are those silica gel packs that come in everything from some dried foods to electronic equipment.

I get plenty from the guys in the warehouse at work.

image You have no idea what we keep in those cans... many are probably considered hazardous waste. I wouldn't use one without decontaminating it some how.

Great tip. Best group of old rolls I ever bought were in old coffee cans. Pristine and fresh like the day they were minted, no toning from the paper or on the end coins. Tin paint cans would do the same thing. Plus they have handles are easy to open, big enough for a lot of stuff. Awesome.

  • I use the .50 Cal/.223 large cans for bullion. They hold 1000 ounces with no problem. The .30 cal/9mm cans hold $500 face of 90% in tubes beautifully.

I store ammo in my ammo cans.... that is their purpose. Coins and gold go in my safe, with large dessicant bags. Cheers, RickO

If the ammo cans ever had live ammo in them there will be very trace amounts of the compounds used in the gunpowder etc. There is your source of toning, albeit very ugly. I have ammo cans but I do not use them for coins! Only batteries go in ammo cans.

Lew Rothman sometimes sells cigars packed in ammo boxes.

  • Thieves like 'em, they have handles and are packed up and ready to go.

  • I have bank rolled cents That I know were stored in an ammo box since the seventies

Our family has used ammo cans to store coins and PM's in for years. I don't see any funny toning. The ammo boxes are GREAT.

  • I have a few coins in an ammo box that I own, but none are of value. I bet it is quite heavy with all of the silver in it.
