Why I avoid Panda's (And all other Chinese issues)

Very good fakes!
At some point a large stash will be discovered and confidence in Chinese issues will tank.

What's to say they won't start reproducing any type of coin / round they want ? Looks like the fakes are going for a good price image

Good point. Who can forget the perfect Morgan fakes?

I would think other countries would get upset quicker than the China (if you even knew about it) if they found their own being faked.

Personal choice, I love the panda's though.

Anyone know who is making the JM gold bar fakes?

How is that a "very good" fake? It doesnt even have a denomination. Dont fear counterfeits, fear your own ignorance on the series!!!

I think they're called CMC or CNC machining or something like that. They make all types of small bullion pieces and fakes. They even copied one of Dcarr's coins.

    Awwww..Panda boy take it personal.

Even those educated in public schools would concede that the Panda issue would
be the most vulnerable to large scale copies from the same country that copies everything else.

But then again, didn't you bloviate in classic Freudian message board style that $5000 is a "bad weekend in Vegas" for you on a thread
where a guy honestly ask about his 300 ounces ....setting off everyone's major league pr*ck alert?

While you belittle, just remember that name calling is the security blanket of an argument lost.

I bet there are some well made fake pandas that look identical to the real ones floating around.

image When did I call you a name? I simply said that you should fear your ignorance on the series, and NOT fear counterfeits. Allow me to help you with the meaning of ignorance. It is a word used to signify that you dont know something. Such as the panda coin series for instance. Its not name calling, its just fact. Anybody who knows anything about pandas knows that all genuine coins carry a denomination. Thats "panda 101". Speaking of "blankets" , your generalization/assesment of an entire series of coins is at the very least unfair.....especially since you know nothing about them it seems. As far as my "bad weekend in Vegas", that remark was to clearly demonstrate that things, particularly money/wealth, are very relative. A forumite asked if 300 ounces of silver was "alot". Thats like asking if $100 is "alot" to spend on a coin purchase. There is no definitive answer to that because of the myriad of perspectives each person has.

Hell of alot more interesting than eagles, maples, or K-rands whose designs are exactly the same from year to year. Add to that mintages often 1/10th that of the other major bullion coins, and also add to that a nation thats in the midst of an economic boom with 1 billion potential new collectors and you have a recepie for the world's number #1 bullion coin!

Reagardless of the team I am rooting, for seeing all those pandas is really neat! Also as said before knowledge is certainly key to buying foreign gold, What a let down it would be to know some of your prized collection is fake.

Maybe that's because you're not a 5 year old girl....

I bought a gold panda for bullion using bing cashback. Showed it to my daughter (like I do many coins) and got an immediate and unprecedented reaction. One word, "MINE!!!"

So I told her I'd buy her a silver one to play with. "OK daddy, the same just a different color." "Yes dear, just a little bigger."

That was this morning so now I'm shopping for a silver panda. Hopefully they have some at the local B@M tomorrow.

Im just ok. 97% or more of the fakes for sale are easy to spot. But there have been a couple good foolers out there. But just as I would never buy a rare U.S. coin raw on ebay Jerry, the same applies to a rare panda bullion coin. Just a tiny bit of common sense goes a loooooong way in this hobby!
  • notwilightnotwilight Posts: 12,864 ✭✭✭
I think you're by far the most experienced panda guy here. I bought this one as bullion, not a rare date at all (I assume). Any comments? thanks. Jerry

Looks good, to me. Also, check the reeding. They should be diagonal instead of the regular vertical. image

I agree that the coin is good (other than those unfortunate hairlines). Trozau brings up an excellent point about the diagonal reeding. That begun with the 2003 issues I believe.
  • notwilightnotwilight Posts: 12,864 ✭✭✭
Yep. Diagonal reeding. Thanks guys. --Jerry

PS the unfortunate hairlines come with a bullion purchase. I will admit that I pic coins that I hope may show up as gradeable but on ebay I don't pay extra for them.

PPS Don't miss the unfortunate brown spots on the rim at 3:00. They almost look like spots from a spark test.

    notwilight,

    That's a nice piece! Congrats.

I pieced together a set of the 2005's and 2006's then had NCG slab each year in a multiholder. It was a fun project. My daughter was born in 2005 (so she's four now) and she just loves the panda designs. She hasn't popped out with a "MINE" yet, but everything she sees a Panda she asks, "Can I have with that?"

Those are just copper spots and are VERY common on earlier date gold pandas. Not as much of a problem post 1996 though.

BTW, this piece will be sold as bullion soon to raise some money for a project I have going so if anyone wants it for spot pricing (I'm thinking $1100 or so delivered) PM me. Not spamming, I'd just rather sell it to someone that wants it than a bullion dealer. --Jerry
