Why so hard to find?

I have been trying to find a really nice 1900 O/CC morgan in a PCGS, NGC or ANACS slab for a month, there are plenty of MS but I need a circulated one. I have seen a few on ebay and then missed them and an occasional AU but I really want a VF to EF. I know there are alot of raw ones but most have issues I don't want. I guess so common not alot in circ grades in holders maybe?

Your problem is the coin is not worth enough to spend the money to put it in a slab in VF to EF. According to the Graysheet the range is from $46 in VF to $75 in EF. Generally a coin should be worth $150 to $200 to make slabbing worth while. Most collectors want this one in Mint State, so the VF and Ef coins are probably slow sellers.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

umm I guess I would disagree about the price range in slabs, as far as morgans go there are huge numbers in slabs that are worth far less then $150.00 to $200. Yes I agree about most wanting it in a MS grade and that maybe why not alot graded.

Exactly what I was about to say...

I have only owned two of these as a dealer...one was an NGC MS64... took two to three years of carrying the coin to every show I did... finally sold it for less than my cost...

Another was a raw AU... took another two years to sell that one... made 10% profit on that one...

I have stopped looking for them altogether...

Sorry to say... but it is a very thin market... you are the first person I have ever even heard of who is looking for this coin in VF-XF... matter-of-fact, I have not had anyone ask for this date/mm since I sold the last one in early 2008.

Your best bet will be to get to some larger shows and scour the bourse... you will probably need to buy it raw and submit it yourself, if you want it in a slab.

The best I can say is... if you enjoy the "hunt", you have chosen an elusive prey to hunt down... good luck and happy hunting image
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

SeaEagleCoins, It is a thin market and I do see them from time to time on ebay, there is a AU I have looked at for awhile but I really want a VF to EF and don't want to spend MS money. These usually go for $60.00 to $100 in these grades when you can find them.

I purchased one about five years ago.... low MS... cannot remember the price, but was reasonable. Would have to dig out some records... Cheers, RickO

Beyond the somewhat thinner market however, this would be a fun pursuit to build a VAM set of 1900-O/CC's in circulated grades. You can occassionally find them raw as well as just 1900-O's with a lot of looking and a little luck. image

I picked one of these up last year. A nice VF raw. It is not very high on my list to submit for grading though. It was just an opportunity to add a neat O/CC mintmark into the collection.

I have one in PCGS VF30 but I think that is lower than you are looking for.

As the CC was almost polished out to reuse the die it is the first part
that wears off. Therefore there are plenty of MS coins but fewer
circulated examples. But they are out there. Several dies were used
in this fashion and some dies retain the faint CC better than others.
If you can't find one and really, really want one I may be able to help.
    PM me.
