Need a good, basic portable safe

ElcontadorElcontador Posts: 7,626 ✭✭✭✭✭
My parents are elderly and have caregivers. Some money is missing. We would like to keep their cash, jewelery, etc. in a basic small, portable safe to prevent this from happening again. Does anyone here have any ideas re models, prices, etc.? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

If the safe is portable, can't the thieves just take it?

Most small safes can be bolted to the floor.

Maybe a safe you can mount in the wall (easier for older folks) or bolt to the floor - electronic may be the best so they don't lose the key or have to fumble with a dial. Depending on their mental health you would create the combination for them. If it is their home you might consider a hidden "nanny cam" along with the safe. Stickers or signs indicating Surveillance is being done may be enough to make the care givers nervous enough not to act out of line.

I would think that most caregivers would be less likely to walk off with a safe. Cash is easy to pocket.

I would look at the line of Sentry Safes. Lot of sizes to choose from and not very expensive.

    << <i>... have caregivers. >>

had some shady caregivers and will be requiring new ones.

are they prepared to use it & without leaving the combo around? cash in the wallet is often just left in the wallet.

I wouldn't expect a safe to stay where it is unless it's bolted down, at least.

  • For your consideration......

Maybe a secure 2 drawer file cabinet would be a good choice.

These are not the cheap sheet metal sided boxes that you can get at discount store.

These units are heavy, sturdy and have a good locking system on them.

Placed out of the way in a closet ... you keep the keys ... room for papers & extra meds.

Check your yellow pages under safe dealers or locksmiths.

These guys usually have lots of these units around and will sell them right.... $100-300.

    Examples...

    Sample 1

    Sample 2

    Hope this helps.

    Abandon cash and go plastic?

I rarely carry much cash on me these days. About the only time I carry a rather large sum is at a coin show for purchases, otherwise the debit card is in full swing.

I took care of an elderly man for years from a distance and plastic is not a good idea. It is easy to lose, he can give his number to the wrong people in many different ways. When someone needs a caregiver, it is a good idea to either cancel their credit cards or tell them they are canceled and put them in your name. Blame it on the credit crunch.

For a safe, you are just looking to keep honest people honest so you don't need much of a safe. Go to costco, walmart, or any discount store and buy a fire safe. Look for a sale. You might even find one on ebay cheap. Use the feature to search for things within X miles of your zip since you'll need to pick it up. Even a small fire safe will weigh too much to ship.

I have this safe I use, nice and easy no combo to remember. Leave key in th lock and swipe a finger twice and it opens. Will not open without fingerprint. Can program more then one print.

I keep for one reason, a loaded glock inside for the day I pray never happens. Also has room for my passports etc.

You can keep the override key which works without fingerprint in case the batteries die on the finger reader or you need access. Had mine for 3 years now and haven't changed the batteries yet.

Bio safes are nice, however, depending on the condition of the 'cared for' folks, it is also easy for unscrupulous caregivers to access (convincing or coercing the cared for to swipe their finger). Best bet is to keep all currency and valuables locked up with access only for yourselves or entirely out of the residence. I would also insist on fully licensed and bonded caregivers. Cheers, RickO

Having it so it'll open with more than just one fingerprint is a great idea. (Make sure it's your's)
That way if gramps dies, you don't have to drag the corpse clear across the house to get the safe open.

I have used one of the Sentry combo safes for over 20 years. It was securely bolted to a concrete floor up until a month or two ago.

After using that safe successfully, I would make the following comments:
    1) As I grew older, I became more and more annoyed by a safe on the floor that was inconvenient to get into.
    2) Being mounted on concrete, I got more moisture than I had anticipated. I had to change silica gel dessicant regularly to prevent mold and the "musties".

When I move into my retirement home, I plan to install a wall safe that can be concealed. It will be at shoulder height for easy access.

Biosensor safes that rely on a fingerprint reader may be fooled by a copy of the fingerprint that has been moistened by saliva. Perhaps the saliva acts as a substitute for sweat.

"small", "portable" and "safe" are 3 words that just don't work together.

Just find a safer place to hide the money. My Grampa used to keep about $5k in cash in the kitchen cupboard. Scum broke in twice and stole a little safe he had just for the occasion. It was filled with about 60 pounds of lead ingots. image

    PH,

This is a good point. But the OP said portable. If they are willing to bolt the portable safe down, I agree with you. But as written, I agree with most everyone here which is; The solution they are looking for to solve their problem has some oxymorons.
    Best Regards,

How about placing your coins inside a live 1000

pound alligator. Of course getting the coins out

might pose a problem and be a tad messy.image

Thanks for the feedback; we are just trying to keep caregivers from taking valuables. My sister is living with my parents and she would handle keys, combination issues, etc.

Keep a 5 pound bar of exlax on hand to feed him, and it shouldn't be a problem.
Of course you're right about the mess.image
