I just freed up a whole bunch of $$ for coins!

UtahCoinUtahCoin Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭✭✭
For years we have been dumping money into our kids educational savings accounts. This past week we found out that our 15 year old son, who just entered 10th grade, has received a free pass to skip 11th & 12th grade and start college at 16. The best part being it's for free!

So, what to buy, what to buy.........

Most of our kids got a lucky dip in the gene pool, and came out with brains rather than brawn. None of our kids have any talent for athletics what so ever. In fact, None of them can walk and chew gum at the same time without tripping. Which is odd considering that they have Olympic caliber genes on both sides. Go figure...

I guess I'd better start looking at some auction catalogs.....

I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

I put two through college that cost just about $200k. That was about a decade of no significant coin purchases.

That's great about the extra funds but even better about your son. You must be very proud of him!

Wow huge CONGRATS thats a big achievement for your son. image
I'll see your bunny with a pancake on his head and raise you a Siamese cat with a miniature pumpkin on his head.

You wouldn't believe how long it took to get him to sit still for this.

  • What would you rather have when your boy reaches 40, a semi crippled former college football star or a surgeon or some such?? Congratulations and have fun with all that bread!!!!

You know I skipped the 11th and 12th grades also, the circumstances were a bit different thoughimage

    you hit the jackpot,
and I'll bet you put some
    real work into your son
    to allow this to "happen"

and having the foresight to save for years
to fund his education- very admirable

Congrats... and I don't mean for having money to buy more coins.
  • I suggest giving the money to your son.

If is missing brawn and is 16, he has no chance with college girls - however, a nice car would help.

Congratulations, you should be, and are, justifiably proud. He may suffer a bit socially the first couple years, after that, the freshman coeds will fill in nicely...Cheers, RickO

  • Congrats to your 15 year old. Great news and a scholarship too! I can only hope mine graduates from high school on time and his grandparents pay for his higher education.
Check with your accountant before you spend it all on coins.image If the money doesn't go towards the child’s education it's all taxable and penalized when withdrawn.

Congrats. I'd say it you saved it for them, then reward them for their hard work. You could save it for them to put a down payment on a house, or even buy a house if you have that much piled away. I started a college fund for my son this year and if he were able to get a free ride to college, I would love to give it to him AFTER he graduated, just in case image

I would keep it in the account.. There are too many variables in life to risk it this soon..

There is a 15 year old in my son's college. He said he is shut out of most functions and made fun of almost daily..

I hope he has "thick skin." Congrats on your son's achievement...

    Congrats!!

You must be very proud of your son.

Buy him a couple ounces of gold to start with, then buy yourself a few real nice coins!

You can always sell the coins back later if you need the money for unforeseen things.

Maybe a nice seated proof half dollar or something. I always see gorgeous stuff on Pinnacle's website that I can't afford!

Buy your son an awesome graduation present (car) with some of the money & then save the rest for his wedding/first home/etc.

    Don't blow it on coins.

    Seriously.

Am I the only one who thinks the idea of using your child's funds for coins is ridiculous?

Congrats to you and your son!
My daughter is on a full ride now, and 'the deal' is that she gets to keep all the 529 money, prepaid tuition credits, etc. But the other part of the deal is that's all there is going to be, so save it and use it wisely. If she wants a big wedding, or down payment on a house, etc. she needs to fund it herself. Same for her younger sister.

Congratulations to your family, Utah. No small feat, that. Were I in your shoes, I would immediately buy my son a key collectible coin, suchas an MS64 1909 S VDB Lincoln to celebrate. Put it away for him and see what happens in 20 years. JMO

    Excellent. What school?

Try to help him out socially. College is a social experience as well as educational. My college roommate at Chicago was 16 and it was tough for him at times.
