Wow, that 1871 has some real appeal

That 1871 is smoking all right, but the OP is asking about the 1857 with the die damage in the hand area.

Even coins that have a completely original "look" to them can certainly be slabbed as Genuine .91
I can attest to this first hand with a recent submission of Seated Halves that I would have bet my left arm
were totally original but were slabbed as Genuine .91. This can certainly happen to any toned coin on any given day, regardless of know provenance.

Dizz, don't take offense, Tom's right, that is a totally original awesome piece, and an under-appreciated date to boot, although that has changed in recent years.

Keep submitting colorful coins Tom, you might have a rude awakening. I trust your "eye" as much as (if not more than ) anyone on this forum but for anyone to even consider thinking that they are impervious to the "Genuine slab result" with any coin (these days especially) is kidding themself.

I for one like the Genuine designation far better than the old 2x2 bodybag. I just think it has become more of a crapshoot on results regardless of the coin or the keen eye submitting it.

Hey John, no offense whatsoever. I happen to agree that that coin is (at least mostly) original. The point I'm trying to make is that IMO, if that coin (or any coin with a similar look) were submitted raw nine times, it would probably get a Genuine .91 at least 33.3% of the time.image

The OP was talking about the 1857 Smoker Quarter, not a "Smoking", as in drop dead gorgeous, Seated Quarter.

But that is one purty 1871!

Here's a very nice eye-appealing Seated Quarter with AU details. For the vast majority of the AU and MS Seated 25c's with that pretty rim toning, this is likely what they looked like before they were placed into the surroundings that caused them to tone. This is a perfect example of what you hear many times over as "an old cleaning". It's when they then re-tone is where they are often times given the Genuine .91 (Questionable Toning) designation. Hard to tell from the images, but this 1876-CC actually still has some nice luster remaining....
