Well if your going to have more than one Lincoln in the collection might as well get both because it's too tough to choose.
Maybe the S-VDB first. You can get a nicer one for less than a nice 55/55 and it's part of the regular set. Then a 55/55, a high grade isn't cheap so a lower grade might be ok.
The '55DDO is a fun coin, no doubt. I don't need a loupe to enjoy it.
But I think it's harder to love the later wheaties. The granularity, the definition, it's just not there with a '50's Lincoln. Gimme a 1909, or a 1916. You gotta love them. Lance.
You ask a very thought provoking great question. I would purchase the 1955 DDO without question. Because of the neatness and rarity. My question to all is w/o being harassed is... the WI High Leaf is est. at a lower mintage than the 1955 error and can be seen w/o a loupe as well, what will collectors think about the WI Extra Leaf Quarters in 55 years ?
IMO the 55/55 is twice as rare. However the pursuit of my first s vdb eventually led me to the double die. Here is a nice chart from PCGS. They definitely go up in value. I’d eventually want 5-10 examples
There are thousands of mint state 1909-S VDB cents in existence, they were saved. There only an estimated 2000-3000 1955 DDO cents in all grades.
I like both co8ns but the 55 DDO is just such a spectacular error.
Good question. Since I have them both. Both were found in circulation. I found the 1909-S VDB while roll searching in about 1962. My uncle found a 1955 double die in the late 50's and I purchased it from him a few years ago, (about 2009) before he passed.
If I had to choose one ( in circulated grade), it would be the 1909-S VDB.
If I had to choose one (In BU grade), it would be the 1955 double die, hands down because they are just so spectacular.

If I were to be seeking one... it would be the '55DDO.... I had two as a kid... They disappeared while I was in the Navy (Mom cleaning out the dresser and other stuff).... Cheers, RickO
The 1955 DDO cent might have saved me from a possible divorce back in 1995. In the fall of 1994 I bought a fabulous 1955 DDO cent in PCGS MS-65 RD.
In February 1995 my wife received a package from her Mom and Dad congratulating her on her 40th birthday as she was born in 1955. I was in the middle of my tax season as a CPA and did not even realize why my wife received such a package. I had totally forgotten her birthday. Then my 9 year old twin daughters were excited about their Mom’s big birthday and had saved up from their allowances to buy her a wonderful birthday present and then asked me when I got home from work what I had bought her for her birthday. In terror, i realized I had nothing to give my wife for her birthday. Then I realized I had a perfect but strange fall back birthday present but it was sitting in my bank safe deposit box. So I made up a mumbo jumbo story how her present was on its way and fortunately had a photo of the coin.
I remember announcing the wonderful present I bought her and the look she gave when she looked at the photo of the coin. That quizzical look. I never forgot that quizzical look.
So 26 years later, my wife still owns that 1955 DDO cent and back in 2009, it received a CAC green sticker.
this is a photo of my wife’s coin. It is doubly fabulous (pun intended) in that it sits in a PCGS OGH plus it was stickered by CAC. In retrospect, it was a cool present as my wife is a Philly girl. She still loves her Phillies and her Iggles. LOL.

The 55/55 is an incredible coin and worthy of one to chase after. With that stated, I'd still want the single 1909-S VDB as it has such a warm place in my heart as a child dreaming of owning one day.
(I now have two and would never sell them...)
Both are great coins in their own right.
Both had been on my want list for decades. The 09-s VDB to fill that very last hole in the Dansco, and purchased raw a handful of years ago. I had longed for that coin since childhood when it was a very elusive holy grail and out of reach to my childhood collections budget.
And then, just last year, the 55 DDO which I finally purchased as a late birthday/ retirement celebration gift to myself. I had been eyeing them for awhile and pulled the trigger on PCGS 63RB with a green bean.
Better late than never!

<< <i>1955 DDO hands down.
-- My birth year.
-- Among most obvious errors in all of numismatics.
-- Off-the-chart popularity. >>
Same here!!!
I will be 55 next year and that will be my "Birthday" present.

60 years into this hobby and I'm still working on my Lincoln set!
However, give me a chance to find (not buy) a 55ddo and I'd be in hog heaven for sure.
The thrill is in the hunt.

Very clean and nice, that is what I will be looking for next year.
I bookmarked your website, just in case.

It's not my coin. It is from the inventory of CRO.

People have already stopped thinking about them. All if took was the next Mint gaffe to cause them to slip off the radar screen.
In no way are these in the same category as the 55 DDO.

Chart is blurry but tracks cost from a price of $172 dollars, xf 40 grade in 1970 to the same coin in 2009 worth $1800

All things being equal, you get more bang for your buck with the 09-S VDB. So, buy the 09-S VDB

Take a wild guess which one I would choose.
12 years later and you still don’t have a player
I guess the ‘09 because you already have a 55.
The 1955 DDO. just because.

I used to enjoy finding older ANACS slabs encapsulating 1955 DDO cents. One of them crossed to PCGS
at AU-58 which then got gold stickered by CAC.
Oh my.
I read this thread a couple of weeks ago and bought one on an impulse on eBay. Just got it today but I borrowed the listing pics to share the coin.
