A decent $100 collector coin for a gift?

Please suggest a decent slabbed coin for a gift. Must have a bit of historical and rarity factor. Does such a coin exist?

Does it have to be a US coin?

  • Good idea. Not real rare but an MS65 can be picked up for just over $100

I take it since you're looking for an MS65 that this is for a collector.

Not that rare but how about an AU58 LM 1864 (or '65 '66 '67) Two Cent piece.
Should interest anyone who loves American history and isn't necessarily into numismatics.

  • Thinking maybe a Civil War era Half in VF. Certainly historical

  • It would help if you described the recipient and the occasion.

I give lots and lots of coins as gifts. Almost everyone likes them. I'm not so sure about your idea of slabbed, especially if it is for a non-collector. With all that, here are some suggestions: a coin from a war year such as 1812, Civil War era, or World War I, or World War II might make a good gift depending on the person's background. A coin from the year that person's town was founded is another historical idea. 100 year old coins are often good choices for a new baby, or a wedding.

Dollars and half dollars are the obvious choices. Most non-collectors and casual collectors appreciate them more, and for most dates, they give more bang for the amount spent on the purchase.

I love many of the modern one-ounce silver issues from other countries. New Zealand and Australia have put out some beauties, and can't go wrong with Britannias (sp?). For something really different--and IMHO highly collectable--take a look at Daniel Carr's silver Ameros. Gorgeous designs, very low mintages, and unique--though not technically currency.

You might be able to find a good looking early capped bust half with an attractive, original look in the F-VF range.

I'd get a flashy Unc. WW II dates Walker. I don't know what they go for these days in the various grades of Unc., but they're attractive, large coins. Personally, I much prefer this design, than that of the Morgan or Peace Dollars.

  • A non collector would tend to appreciate something lustrous and shiny, such as an MS64 Morgan. But you could get a nice Seated Half as well.

Morganhunter- Keets coud have bought that ms65 for about 11 bucksimage compared to the 1901 s barber quarter that is high.

For 100 bucks, a nice unc morgan, or you can be mean and get them a solid date unc bag of mid 1970's lincoln cents.

I think a commemorative half dollar from whatever state they reside in, or were born in would be pretty cool.

I think it would depend upon what the person already collects. If you know this [or can readily find out] buying something that augments their collection would definitely be a plus.
