Who can tell a good story about numismatists and smoking?

Other than the stench of stale cigarette/cigar/pipe smoke, I have nothing to share.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I suspect the residue has ruined many an otherwise nice coin.

Two stories about smokers, don't know if they're good or not:

Mail ordered a book from a coin store. Apparently people smoked a lot in the store, and tobacco odor wafted up everytime I turned a page. Had to return it. No hassles, but lost postage.

Bought a coin from eBay. Would not have thought it possible, but the coin itself absolutely reeked of tobacco odor. I tried to return it, but the seller thought that was a crazy reason and would not accept a return. Eventually wound up in an eBay dispute over it, which I won.

  • if i was to quit smoking, id have MUCH more money to spend on coins ! my brand is $7.25 a pack currently, i smoke a pack a day, that is roughly a silver half and a silver quarter a day, X 365 days is $273.75 face value in silver coins i would have at the end of the year (theoretically speaking) if i was to spend the money on silver instead of smokes. at 10x face, move the decimal point slightly to the right, and i need a smoke break !

A good "story" about Numismatics & smokin', huh?

I'm not sure where this is goin' ... but -

Some people smoke. Some people drink.

but cigarette smoke sure does stink!

I recall when I wouldn't date a girl that smoked.

I didn't want that stench stinkin' up my car.

I recall the first time I kissed a woman that smoked.

Young - a non-smoker, but wanting those draws. image

She was Extremely Fine and I had a choice to make.

We shared a lot more than love for coins, for sure,

but mostly what I learned is to never say Never.imageimage

What this has to do with anything, I don't know but

what do you want for 4:30 in the Mornin'?

I think I'll have that cigarette now. image
  • some people smoke and some people drink ?? i only smoke if im drinking, and i drink if im smoking

I distinctly remember getting a shipment of raw coins in 2x2's from an Ebay seller years ago. When I raised the 2x2's to view them with a loupe, the stench of cigarette smoke was almost enough to make me gag. It was obvious the seller was a heavy smoker.

If you buy a book or slab or whatever that reeks of smoke, put it in a container or plastic bag with a fabric softener sheet for a couple days to get rid of the stink. In the grand scheme of things, this really isn't a very big deal. Also, I hope those forum members that still smoke make an effort to quit since I sure hate to lose any of our good forum members.

I have had to walk out of two coin shops because they were so smoke 'laden'...I am not one of those strident anti smoking people. It is legal, it is a choice (I think a bad choice), but as such, up to the individual. I do not care to share though... so I leave an area with a lot of smoke. It certainly does 'cling' to things... clothes, hair, books etc. Cheers, RickO

Yes, I agree that it is a filthy, stinking habit. I don't believe in excuses nor in rationalizing (denial) however,
I will say that while I once was very adamant about NOT smoking, being young, strong and very athletic -
many years ago I was involved in an accident that caused me to stay laid up in a cast up to my butt for 9
months, bored out of my mind.

One day, I made the terrible mistake of asking for that First cigarette (I repeat .... I had been EXTREMELY anti-smoking).
My system was soooo clean that I actually caught what amounted to a cheap "buzz". Being so utterly bored
for an extended period of time, in excruciating pain, somehow my subconscious mind linked that buzz of cigarettes
to pain. The more I hurt I quickly found myself smoking (The unthinkable had transpired).

To make matters worse, there are times when I still presently suffer extreme lower back pain. Now I am hooked to the point
that I actually enjoy the very thing I once SWORE I'd never do. On top of all this, the manufacturers place highly addictive,
very lethal toxins/ poisons IN the cigarettes to PURPOSELY HOOK people. Of all the "bad habits" I've had, I've managed to
kick ALL of them except for cigarettes. This is because of the ingredients and the extremely powerful subconscious mind.

I have seen firsthand, the damage cigarettes cause. I have also witnessed many an otherwise intelligent, logical, strong-willed
individual become powerless - totally unable to break this very powerful adddiction and make no mistake about it - it IS full fledged
    drug addiction.

The more I hurt, the more coffee or other caffeine I drink and nicotine I partake of. It's very frustrating because the habit IS, without
doubt, THE most dificult to simply walk away from. The key IS that the individual has got to WANT to quit. Many an otherwise
intelligent person knowingly lights up despite knowing the risks and repercussions. I'd say that's a PRETTY TOUGH habit to break & YES,
I STILL THINK it's a filthy, disgusting habit that stinks up our Homes, cars, our clothes and coats our lungs with Tar and the stench of cigarette
smoke IS quite nasty yet knowing all this, because of what is placed in cigarettes to PURPOSELY hook people is, I feel frustrtated & powerless
and continue to smoke & it pisses me of Royally.

Like everything else, when I've had enough of it and get angry enough (with myself) to quit - hopefully by the Grace of God, I WILL.
It's tough - that's for sure - especially when you've messed around with them long enough to actually ENJOY them ... as insane as that IS
    & possibly can be.

**Oh, but to edit *** I can see that coin buying/ collecting IS a very addiciting habit as well. image

When I was young around 10/11 I walked in a coin/ball card shop on Marlboro Pike in Hillside Maryland and bought my first ounce of Gold.. It was a nice $20 Lib.. Beat up as hell, I guess maybe XF.. Paid $100 bill for it.. Well, I noticed old man Taylor and everyone knew him was always couching, lighting up a damn cig to stop his chocking.. Well as I was paying for my first Gold coin, my mother said I was f-ing crazy for buying a piece of worthless metal coin,

Mr. Taylor was really struggling and couching real hard, he told my mother your son is spending his money wisely, well I saw blood dribbling from the side of his mouth.. He told me I was a good kid and never mind his issues, but he told me son never, never smoke, I told him, I can't stand it and it stinks, I can't understand why my mom and dad walk around the house late at night like Harry Potter with his wand glowing to take a crap or wee, wee..

Well Mr. Taylor passed away no more than a few weeks later, but I remember him showing up everyday and was the nicest man I ever met..

To everyone out there that still smokes.. My mother had a massive heart attack because of being a chain smoker and when she was in Washington hospital center after having quad bypass surgery, I looked on the wall and saw a plastic jug that was sucking bile from her lungs, the Dr. told me it was actually the coating of tar and all the other chemicals from Cigs draining and sliding off of her lungs.

Then just last year, my father a drinker and a chain smoker died with lung cancer just 2 months after he stopped smoking, he had lung cancer for 10 years and didn't tell anyone and didn't care for Doctors..

Please quit smoking people, chances are you will gain weight, but it's better for meds to help clean tissue instead of coated asphalt organs..

I have tried Nicorette chewing gum for a couple of months- but it was nasty and had to mix it with Eclipse gum but I still cheated occasionally. I ran out of gum and picked up smoking again; after a week of smoking again, I bought the NicoDerm Patch and have been smoke free three months now. It isn't easy and I could light up at a drop of a hat but I won't. The problem is that I always enjoyed smoking.

Cigarette smoking is one of the most addictive things you do to yourself; when I was younger, I thought I could stop anytime I wanted to. Back in the late 1970's I went to an eight week course called Smoke-Enders which worked for me and didn't smoke for three years. I kicked myself for ever having started up again.

The trick to not smoking is to never start in the first place.

That's how much I'd have to pay too. Luckily I could easily cross over to Will County (I live in Cook), and pay $4.60/pack at a tobacco store. But if the times late and they're closed its over $7 depending on where I go.

As for getting coins with the stench of cigarettes - just simply do not smoke in your home or at least not the room with collectibles. I have no problem not smoking in my house since I don't want everything I own to smell like cigarettes. Sure I won't be able to tell the difference but anybody that visits my home could. It's also an incentive to smoke less especially during Chicago winter image

Name brand cigs are $3.50-4.50/pk here still, but I don't smoke. I work as an x-ray technologist and have seen the affects of smoking first hand up close and personal, PLUS my grandad died of heart and lung complications due to smoking and my grandmother had lung CA from smoking, both smoked for 60+ years.

On the coin subject, I've had numerous packages come in that smelled like the bottom of an ashtray, surprisingly the coins were ok, but I can see raw coins getting a good coating of tar if they're left exposed to cig smoke.

I recently cleaned the inside of my dad's gas station and when I sprayed clorox on the walls, the brown tar stains littlerally dripped off and ran down the wall. Why put that in your LUNGS, they're the only two you will have.

Chantix is a good thing. google it.......

Guess I'm one of the few Pipe Smokers on this board, so I have to speak up image

Those who wish to kick the habit of cigarettes should try a pipe.. The tobaccos aren't laced with added "poisons" to make you crave more... Also, since you're NOT inhaling the smoke it's Not as harmful to your lungs.... Those around you will probably comment that an elderly relative smoked a pipe & it brings back pleasant memories too..

Anyway, I enjoy reading the forum while puffing away & sipping coffee. ha

Nobody smokes because they "Don't" like it.
Those that do smoke REALLY, TRULY enjoy it.
Those that smoke but hate the fact that they do, are addicted to it!

The real danger in smoking, is its ready availability. ANYBODY can go to the local store and buy cigarettes! If heroin were as readily available, the number of addicts would be astronomical!

Smoking is a "young" persons game as the effects are easily shaken off by young, growing bodies. Their life's experience tells them its ok to smoke!
Older folks that still smoke, do not shake off those effects so easily and their life's experience tell's them they're in a world of hurt!

Usually but not always, a diagnosis of lung cancer will bring the reality of the situation to light causing most folks to quit. But not always. This is the true level of addiction!

The ONLY way to quit smoking successfully, is to hate IT and HATE those that do it with all your might! You must avoid them like they had the Ebola Virus!
Then, you MUST change your life! Change your daily habits and rituals and even change FRIENDS if need be! If they are truly your friends, they will understand!

Once you break free from the "rituals" and "life style" addictions of smoking (you smkoers know what I'm referring to here!), you can lighten up a bit on the "hate" part but you must still hate it enough to never, ever pick it up again! It will kill you!

I wonder when this much emphasis will be put on obesity. You can pretty much change the smoking to "eating fast food" and smokers to "unhealthy eaters" and the story will sound the same. I am by no means bashing those who are overweight, or bashing Lee's comment because I do agree to quit requires complete lifestyle changes. I've quit a few times before but I guess starting back up I didn't have the mindset to actually want to quit, so it is what it is. I'm in the "do what you want with your life" crowd. But my point is obesity is right behind tobacco in death rate. And the US is the most obese country in the world.
  • dragondragon Posts: 4,548 ✭✭
Well as long as this is turning into an anti-smoking thread, why don't some of you also discuss the evils of fast food (high fat, high cholesterol, etc), drinking alcohol and a sedentary lifestyle which IMO kill far, far, far more people every year than tobacco use does.

But, in the long run, you may save money by smoking because you'll die five or six years sooner than you would otherwise need to and you know, during those five or six years (not an insignificant amount of time?), you would have had many expenses for food, shelter, clothing, entertainment, coins, etc.

My Grandma and Grandpa were heavy camel filterless smokers. When she died, she left me a bunch of coins and bills. Some of the bills were uncircualted silver cert. star notes. The problem is, from being in here house for 30+ years, the bills still smell of cigarette smoke. She has been gone nearly 10 years, and the smell of smoke still remains. I wish there was away to get rid of it from these bills. I have plenty of things to remember my Grandma by, the smell of stail cigarette smoke does not need to be one of them.

I guess I was hoping someone would have a story about John J. Ford trading fake western gold for cigarettes image

As for the OP, I am researching Frank Stewart, who purchased, excavated, and razed the first US mint in downtown Philadephia. He seems to have this thread of cigar attraction that runs through his life. From early on he tried to have a cigar in hand whenever being photographed - we have pictures of him in his 20s through his 70s, and there is always that cigar. We see allusions to cigars in his personal papers - one time he talks about winning a bunch of cigars in a game of chance, and later on he is buying cigars for all the members of his fishing club. The man clearly enjoyed a good smoke, and, unless the editor intervenes, we should be able to present the prototype of the numismatic dandy who liked nothing more than an overstuffed chair, a smoke & a good numismatic read. As luck would have it, there is a surviving picture of Stewart which neatly combines all of these elements.

Now, back to the anti-smoking rants image

Without seeming flippant, can you stay on the subject without getting carried off onto another of the problems that some folks seem to have in an attempt to minimize the dangers of smoking?

There is no correlation between the two with regard to this thread since I've received several eBay orders with the stench of stale tobacco but have yet to get one packaged with the remnants of a BigMac or a Whopper with Cheese. >>

Point taken. I too have received coins in the mail that did reek like cigarettes, even though I smoke myself. I can only imagine how much that person smoked for me to be able to tell of a smell.

    << <i>When I see a smoker I turn the other way...
and personally smoking is one of the few things I actually "HATE".... >>

Kind of like when I see an obese person riding the electric carts around the grocery store I work at because they are too lazy to walk. Using one of the few machines we have there while someone with a complication could have better use of it. Sorry Lee, had to bring it back up since I saw this comment image

  • << <i>I smoked 2 cigs just reading this thread.image I was going to quit when they got to 1 dollar a pack, then 2, then 3 and i dropped that part. These new FIRE SAFE CIGS may cause me to finally quit. They really rub me wrong. >>

Roll your own. It's not hard.
