I bought an "original" paper roll of Franklins off ebay a couple years ago that was supposed to be Gem BU.

The roll stunk of cigarette smoke so bad and the coins were so dingy and smelly that I bought some Tarn-X and dipped them clean.

    Problem solved.

Nobody smokes because they "Don't" like it.
Those that do smoke REALLY, TRULY enjoy it.
Those that smoke but hate the fact that they do, are addicted to it!

The real danger in smoking, is its ready availability. ANYBODY can go to the local store and buy cigarettes! If heroin were as readily available, the number of addicts would be astronomical!

Smoking is a "young" persons game as the effects are easily shaken off by young, growing bodies. Their life's experience tells them its ok to smoke!
Older folks that still smoke, do not shake off those effects so easily and their life's experience tell's them they're in a world of hurt!

Usually but not always, a diagnosis of lung cancer will bring the reality of the situation to light causing most folks to quit. But not always. This is the true level of addiction!

The ONLY way to quit smoking successfully, is to hate IT and HATE those that do it with all your might! You must avoid them like they had the Ebola Virus!
Then, you MUST change your life! Change your daily habits and rituals and even change FRIENDS if need be! If they are truly your friends, they will understand!

Once you break free from the "rituals" and "life style" addictions of smoking (you smkoers know what I'm referring to here!), you can lighten up a bit on the "hate" part but you must still hate it enough to never, ever pick it up again! It will kill you! >>

I wonder when this much emphasis will be put on obesity. You can pretty much change the smoking to "eating fast food" and smokers to "unhealthy eaters" and the story will sound the same. I am by no means bashing those who are overweight, or bashing Lee's comment because I do agree to quit requires complete lifestyle changes. I've quit a few times before but I guess starting back up I didn't have the mindset to actually want to quit, so it is what it is. I'm in the "do what you want with your life" crowd. But my point is obesity is right behind tobacco in death rate. And the US is the most obese country in the world. >>

Very good observation. I'll add the morbidly obese don't generally leave fat slim on their collection (I try no to anyway). Although cookie crumbs in the shipping containers might be objectionable unless the coins are slabbed, then it would be okay. image

I went through this thread briefly and I didn't see any input regarding crack smoking if I missed it I'm sorry.

I like many others enjoy going to shows (even though it has been awhile). I also enjoy stopping in Brick and Mortar shops when I am in new towns.

On many occasions after looking at inventory and condition I have concluded that there are those who smoke crack while pricing coins.image

Frankly, that is where I thought you were going with this thread.image

So were mine... 5 packs a day for 50 years! And yes, they eventually succumbed to tobacco-related disease.

Coins can be doctored by exposing them to cigarette or cigar smoke, but there are other methods that the coin doctors use that work better than smoking them.

Once in a while I will open a delivered package and once the air inside the package permeates out there is the omnipresent whiff of heavy cigarette smoke. It is annoying when that happens and since air loses odor through transit and exposure it makes you wonder just how much the package assembler was smoking when they packed up your package.

My particular demographic (Asian American adult males in their 20's) tend to have a very high number of smokers, and it is a very good thing that I never picked up the habit. Actually, the reason I never smoked was because my dad smokes (still) and everytime I am downwind I am reminded of how disgusting the smell can be to bystanders. My other half smokes as well, actually it's a good indicator of her boredom and anxiety levels...the more she feels bored or anxious the more she smokes.

Earlier today I was notified that an employee of mine (18 year old female) was cited for possession (of that other type of smokable vegetation) last night. She really isn't the type you'd expect to be in trouble for that, but we'll save that story for next time.

  • Warning - There is nothing more annoying than a reformed smoker image

I quit cold turkey a few years ago. I got home from a late night out with the boys and ran out of smokes just as I opened my front door. Figured I would take a quick trip down the street to pick up a pack. Was pulled over and was slapped with a DUI. That was the last time I ever smoked! I still have the pack of smokes that I bought that night. It has been a great reminder of my inexcusable DUI, and the habit that preceded it.

Also, for those who smoke ... you of course do realize that RJ Renoynds, Phillip Morris, etc., do not allow smoking on their property. And, they need a lot of new people to take up smoking each and every day just to make up for the smokers who died of lung cancer the prior day ... all to just to maintain the current profit margins .... ummmm.

Pipes ... cigars, etc ... no problem there, unless of course you count mouth, throat and neck cancers.

My only story is the aweful look on my face when I get an e-bay package drenched in tobacco smoke. image
