Well here is that gold coin from the major red flag Ebay auction.....

A few days back, I bid on that Ebay auction with the new seller, no feedback and Grandpa's estate. The coin came yesterday. Although the coin isn't a gem, it is authentic, has not been cleaned, and is properly graded by Anacs at MS60/60.

Here is the auction;

Gold Coin

Here is the coin. Even at $320, I think I did alright. Another slot filled in the certificate type set. image

Ah, good for you! Not all of those "Grandpa's estate" auctions are bogus. I like that coin at that price! image

Looks like a good deal to me ! Looks all original with some mint lusterimage
The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.

why do you state it is properly graded?

tip of the taira appears to have rub and there is enough heavy marks
in hair to call it rub. eagle's breast appears to have rub. rim chewed
up a bit. au58 in my book.

i am just commenting is all. nice coin though. hard to find in the old
anacs style grading "slab" i bet.

Although there is a alot of contact marks, rotating the coin shows the luster flowing over the high points. The grade of 60 isn't suppose to be an eye appealing gem, and I think this is the deffinition of a 60.

rub is rub to me. i gave up market grading for technical grading.
the tip of the tiara "appears" to be slightly worn as that is a high point
    on the coin.
i am not in the biz. i am a collector image

i know others will disagree with me that is why i just state it is my
opinion. i like the coin. lots and lots of luster remaining and i bet
    it looks great in hand.
  • Looks ok for what it is, and for the price, but that rim damage seems bad enough to keep it from slabbing here at PCGS? Am I wrong?

As the OP stated, this would be a good example of MS60. If it didn't make that grade, than it might make AU53. JMHO

Judging from the photograph, I would not give it MS60.....Low AU likely..... perhaps the faults are magnified, but they seem substantial. Cheers, RickO

well the coin has more then enough luster for 58 in my mind. it is
only the MS part i am debating.

a 53-55 normally has a lot less luster then that coin, by far.

Certainly looks 60 to me. ANACS has its problems with AT [in my experience], but they certainly can tell if something is worn or not.

Hey, I'm just glad you didn't get burned!

The looks like an MS-60, more likely an MS-61 to me, since the MS-60 grade is almost never used. Sure it has bag marks, but that's what the MS-61 grade is all about for gold.

well the whole debate is based on pics... so being off a grade, plus
or minus, is to be expected.

i just look at a lot of half eagles and that tiara tip looks worn down
    a bit to me.

The price range in the PCGS guide for this date from VF30 to MS62 is $330-$550. The Break doesn't happen until MS63. So I got a fair deal at $330 shipped. The coin is probably a $400 coin give or take $50 image

It reminds me a WHOLE lot of the four coins that a friend showed me in an "Elvis Special" bracelet. There were liberty half and quarter eagles, in bezels...all looked like they were UNC when put in, but had tons of little peckmarks, a lot like this coin. Seeing the marks on the rim, maybe it was in a bezel at one time too.
