Got a box a pennies from the bank---

I'm on vacation all week, just hanging around the house and relaxing. I got a little bored yesterday, so I go to town and get 1 box of pennies from one bank and 1 box from another. I open the first one and the rolls are hand wrapped. They are all wheats so far. I've only gone through half of them and have been able to complete a date set minus the 1922 and 1943. No 14-D, 24-D, 31-S etc. Quite a few of the late 40's and 50's still have red showing. A sprinkling of mintmarked teens and 20's too as well as S mints from the 40's and 50's. I know this is nothing spectacular, but it is fun to go through them, and I have 25 more rolls to go.

    treasure find for me, too.

I found maybe a dozen wheaties in my last $25 box, and a little fewer in candadian cents. image

I'd love to have gotten that box you did!

I think it's really spectacular! Especially if you're finding mintmarked teens! Did you go back to the bank and see if they had any more similar boxes?

Yeah, the bank might have some dime and quarter boxes! image
  • I've had the itch to pick up a box lately but I'm always afraid that my results would end up like MsMorrisine. Your story kind of inspires me though. Maybe I'll have to pick one up in the near future. BTW, great find!
  • Are you nuts? Go back to that bank and get a few more boxes!

    Milk goes well with Wheaties..image
  • I got about a dozen half dollar rolls from the bank a couple of months ago, and they were all silver. There were 3 or 4 really nice toners too! I don't know which find would be more valuable, but I think t would definitely be more interesting and fun to go through your box of wheaties.

I haven't found a mint marked wheat from the teens in about 10 years, I'd go back and pick up a couple more box's.

Well, I went back to the bank today and they wouldn't sell me anymore boxes of pennies. They said they were low and that I should come back next week. Oh well.

I've completed going through the box I did get. I managed a complete set from 1934 to 1958 except for the 1943 issues. Not one steel in the whole group. I also managed at least one example from 1909 to 1933 except 1922 and 1933. The oldest mintmarked was a 1917-S VG. I also found one teen with a mintmark of D. The last number is so worn I can't tell, but it does not have the VDB on Lincoln's shoulder. I know it's not a 1911,16 or 17. Judging from the shape of what I can see, it's a 1912, 13,14 or 15 D. I'm leaning toward 13-D. It would grade F01 or F02 IMO.

    Fun time anyway image

Is this bank in a very small community? I only ask because I have never bought a box of coins from a bank
that were hand rolled. I would think these have to be from a small town that doesn't get armored car service.

I wouldn't say small, but medium might fit better. I gotten boxes both ways, hand and machine rolled and sometimes both types in the same box.

Congrats! I think it would be a hoot to find something like that.
