Which series do you buy exclusively in PCGS slabs?

For me I guess it's Mercury Dimes and US Patterns as for the last few years I don't even bother glancing at other TPG slabs.

I would say mercury dimes, but I will buy any raw and other holders. I simply have them regraded when needed for my set.

I've also noticed that when surfing sites I tend not to look at any Colonial to pre 1839 coinage in anything but PCGS holders.

    All that I buy.
I do not like white holders.
And I don't like the grades on the others that are clear or grey.
And yes I will pass on a coin that I don't like in any holder.

Nothing exclusive but I made a mental note on my collection recently.............My toned 1933-47 ms and pf Walkers are mostly in PCGS holders and my toned classic commems are in predominately NGC holders. However, I would not pass a coin I loved because of the holder. One day I will probably cross them all into one holder or the other for pure astetic reasons. I reserve the right to change my mind on that statement. All of my stuff so far are in 66-68's holders and I feel I've been picky enough that they would cross over either way or at least crack out to equal grades....jmho.......MJ

Any pre 1964 Washington Quarters in ms67 grade. I try to only by PCGS graded coins with this series, but will buy NGC coins with nice eye appeal too. I just don't agree with most of NGC's ms67 WQ's.

Lincoln wheaties. I crossed all my NGC ones to PCGS last year. Roughly 40. 75% crossed fine. 20% lost a grade or more. 5% were BB'd for questionable color.

PCGS is much tougher on copper. Their guarantee demands it. NGC has a limited warranty on copper (10 years, more or less) and it's practically impossible to determine the starting point.

Sure, buy the coin not the holder. But whether you like it or not the holder influences resale price.

When I collected Mercury Dimes and Jefferson Nickels proofs I only purchased PCGS graded coins. NGC examples in both series were not on a par in terms of market acceptance and sale prices. The disparity for DCAM proof Jefferson Nickels is pronounced. Now I am focused on only quarter eagles. The disparity in that series between the grading services is not as broad. Nonetheless I only purchase PCGS graded examples since I don't want the bother, expense and potential risk in crossing from NGC to PCGS.

Almost everything I own is in a PCGS slab, either I bought it raw and had PCGS slab it or
it was already slabbed by PCGS.

    ONE very unfortunate exception!!!!.....................................TOKENS. HTT's & CWT's

When............ oh............ when, will PCGS start grading my tokensimage

None, I only collect coins regardless of the plastic, heck, I even buy raw and old anacs holders.

Buffalo nickels. But that's only because I like the way PCGS slabs look. I don't think PCGS grades any better than NGC. They just grade differently.

There aren't any series that I buy exclusively in slabs let alone slabs of a particular company.

Agree. Not every nice coin is in a PCGS holder. Do you collect coins or slabs?

  • Exclusively in a PCGS slab....nothing. Plastic means squat to me. I only find plastic useful when selling a coin because the hobby has come to rely on plastic to determine the value of a coin. I prefer 'em raw, so I can stick 'em in an album or old mint set holder.

I collect slabs... I like them that way...bought a 1955 DDO Lincoln 25 years ago...thought I knew my stuff only to be proved wrong when sending it in... BB cleaned...screw what eveyone else thinks I do it my way and now it works just fine....image

For the most part I don't really care what holder the coin is in. I buy coins not slabs.

However, I've noted one series that I can say I almost never see nice in NGC. The $5 Indian series in high end AU. For some odd reason most NGC graded coins are dull and washed out in those grades. PCGS also but you can find some nice ones in rare instances. Overall, there just seems to be a glut of NGC graded $5s. I think this has to do with the fact that generally $5 Indians were one of the poorest coins made at the US mint from a luster and eye appeal POV. Just an observation...

I also buy coins, not slabs. But when it comes to the series that I mentioned - proof nickel - I have looked at hundreds of NGC coins )I go to a lot of shows and auction lot viewing) and not found a single one that I thought was strong for the grade I am looking for (65 Cameo). After a while, I have completetly given up looking. It wastes my time. IMHO, every coin that I saw in an NGC holder that I would grade a strong 65, NGC called a 66. Might I miss a coin by screening NGC out? Hey - anything is possible and I might miss a coin or two, but it is just not worth the vexation of looking at a lot of these in NGC slabs.

All of them...except, as Stefanie already mentioned, the various tokens that PCGS does not currently slab.
  • When I was actively collecting Lincoln cents, Id only buy PCGS. They get it right on the color with copper so much more than anyone else. Why take the chance...

Now, with my N.O. collection, itll be only PCGS for my registry set, but Ill buy ANACS or NGC too and try to cross them.

The only things I buy exclusive are ones that are common enough to guarantee finding a pq version in PCGS plastic and there is no cost benefit to crossing if a pq coin is found in a competitor plastic. Otherwise anything goes and I just cross it over at a later date.

"Buy the coin, not the holder" IF you are an EXTREMELY experienced grader who can spot nearly undetectable wear on a poorly struck toned coin. "Buy the coin, not the holder" IF you are truly confident in your ability to detect expertly cleaned, altered or counterfeit coins.
If you are even slightly doubtful of your coin expertise, you'll be much safer just buying the holder. Not always 100% safe, just safer.

  • As far as Jeff Proofs go I dont see that PCGS is stricter than NGC. I have several that PCGS grades as CAM that are borderline at best. But i grade the coins myself so if the price is commensurate with my grade I will buy it. Having said that I prefer the PCGS slab especially for smaller coins. From what i have seen with Jeff Proofs the 65,66,67 grades are interchangeable. I think they throw darts

There are way too many overgraded CBHs in PCGS 65 holders too, and everyone who collects the series knows this fact also. The grading companies HAVE to put 63 and 64 CBHs into 65 slabs or they wouldn't have any place to stick their overgraded AUs.
