What would you do?

Let's say you needed a coin for your collection, this coin will now be refered to at the super-widget. A well known dealer just happens to have 2 of your super-widget coins for sale. Same price, let's say $10K.. Both are in PCGS holders

Coin A: Dipped with a CAC green bean

Coin B: Monster toned, without a sticker and might be overgraded
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Depends on the coin. In my collecting career, there's only been one time that I couldn't choose between two coins of the same grade. It was two gem 1847 dollars, one from the Garrett collection and one that had probably been dipped in the past. Finally, after much frustration, I chose the dipped coin.

I voted neither also. Isn't the definition of a widget that it is commonly available? I would think if that is the case, even a "Super widget" will come up soon enough.

10K? That's some widget! Ok, for the "super widget". I'm guessing you mean a coin that is available at a price, lets say for arguement a high grade seated half or quarter from the 1880's. They come nice, they are available from time to time. In my case, I'd want a gorgeously toned piece that's PL, which is a characteristic of many of them in this time frame. I'd opt to hold out for one that was accurately graded, like Tom B. says. I wouldn't consider a tough low-pop date in either series to be a "super widget", so if either or both became available, I'd have to see the coin to decide.

Coin B, in the abstract. I might pass altogether depending on the "monsterness" of the toning and what I personally graded
    the coin...

  • Not sure how to answer the poll...too many potential variables...

Since I don't need any 10k coins for my collection...if I did have 10k to spend, I'd be looking for problem-free, original VF-AU Barber Quarters and Halves with "the look"image... slabbed or raw... with no concern what-so-ever as to whether it has a green bean or not...

    But hey...that's just me...image

Neither beans nor toning are important..... only the coin itself. And toning would certainly eliminate most from consideration. image Cheers, RickO

Voted for the neither option but if you show me the coins, I may pick one or the other.

Without photos you're asking me to make a sight unseen purchase, hence I need a deeper discount price.

There is not really enough information here. The word "widget" implies that there are quite of these around, but the $10,000 price tag contradicts that. The only such “widget” that I can think of is a 1907 High Relief $20 gold.

    My response: PASS

I would wait for a toned coin (what I like) that was accurately graded.

I would take neither or b, depending on the toning, I'm more interested in what the coin looks like than it's "grade".
