Didn't know AGE's could tone

Just checked my $5 AGE's that have been in my safe for years and half of them have some kind of toning from a burnt orange to a purplish hue or both. All are PCGS MS69's.

    Sounds kinda nice, actually.

Must be the trace of copper in the alloy.

I mean, yeah, they're .999 gold, but they're alloyed with copper, right? Couldn't be pure 24K gold, or you could bend 'em.

I bought some 2007 PCGS-69 AGEs and they are toned around the edges, not bad really.

The AGE I like the most is one that I've had for over 20 years - the toning isn't that noticeable, but it's become much richer looking as time goes by. I don't know if the pic conveys it, but I like it more all the time! It's now in a PCGS MS-69 holder.

AGE's are 22K and are alloyed with copper. The Gold Buffalos are 999 fine.

The silver and the copper allow the toning.... well, in combination with whatever atmosphere they are stored in - i.e. humidity, sulfur, methane etc.... image Cheers, RickO

fcloud, you posted that while I was posting... very unique - it would be interesting to understand the environment that caused that toning. Unless of course, it was a 'medical' experiment image. Cheers, RickO

AGE's are 9167 fine not 999 fine and 22k not 24k, they are not pure gold.

I've noticed much more AGE toning in PCGS slabs versus NGC slabs. Plastic composition possibly?

I have seen this toning on the gold buffalos as well. My guess is that what ever chemical was on the surface is causing the color and that the gold buff itself is not toning.

For the AGE's I'd say a combination of surface contaminants and improper mixture which brings the copper to the surface.

More likely the paper insert or the ink on the insert if at all.

    Love those toned AGE!!
