Is this an altered date 1914-D Lincoln?

1914 D LINCOLN CENT 1909 VDB AND MORE KEY LOT 76 COINS

The spacing between the numerals and the size/position of the mintmark just doesn't look right to me, but it's really hard to tell since the coin is so beat-up as it is. I don't see a "VDB" on Lincoln's shoulder, however judging by those heavy scratches in that particular area, I suspect it could have been crudely ground off.

Yea, it looks like an altered 1944-D to me.

The second "1" is too far to the right.

And the 'black goo' (seller's words) on the coin is just too convenient of a cover-up for a poor alteration.

Are you thinking altered from an 1814-D??

Yes. It was made from a 1944-D. The spacing between the numbers is all wrong.

Probably a 1944-d. The 9-1 spacing looks too wide for a 1914 and the center of the D is not angular. The melted goo would cover any tooling marks and the photo isn't clear enough to rule out a VDB on the shoulder.

I suspect someone wanted to almost obliterate a '44-D to make it harder to confirm a fake. But this has the big gap between the 9 and second 1 and the wide 4 digit that you see from the altered 1944-D cents.

    I agree. Counterfeit.

Yep, looks like a big scrape along the rim where it was tooled.

I emailed the seller with information, and though after the sale...he told me he is contacting the buyer to make him aware and offer to cancel the sale.

Yes. Wrong 4, spacing between 1 and 4, and the second 1 is too tall.

That one is so obviously altered..... too bad more buyers do not invest in coin books.... would save themselves money in the long run. Cheers, RickO
