New to the boards.

While I have been viewing the boards for some time, I am finally making some posts. I have been involved with coins since age ten. The hobby has truly provided me with much enjoyment over the years. I find it interesting how the time goes by. It seems like only yesterday that, as a young man in my mid 20's, I was viewing the Eliasberg collection on display at the Philadelphia Mint in the mid 70's. I think I spent most of my summer there. Most of the coins were mounted in wood-framed plexiglass sleeves that would pivot such that one could see both sides. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the greatest collection of all time. As I look at my collection, I see the coins are still in the same state of preservation. I only wish I could say the same about myself. It has been quite a ride, with hopefully many more miles to go, many new friends to make, many experiences to share, and many new experiences to be had. That's the great thing about this hobby, and something one can never stop appreciating.

Sounds like you've been actively collecting and enjoying the hobby for many years, like a lot of us. What kinds of things do you collect? I'm putting together a registry type set, with just 4 left to go, and figure it will be 2 more years until I finish it. I've gotten off course and purchased a few things this year that don't belong to the set (gold), and also made a few upgrades, or I may have finished it this year... but that's fine! I enjoy what I'm doing and am doing what I enjoy.
Looking forward to more of your posts!

I bet you like Munchkins
At the same time, my mentor had offered me a truly Gem 1921 Morgan DMPL for the tidy sum of $30. It actually looked like an impeccable proof. I declined because it wasn't a cameo, and besides, I didn't like the way the 21's looked anyway. What a stupid mistake! I think greysheet is now about 9 grand in 65dmpl, and this coin was indeed at least a 65 dmpl. Thankfully, there are only about a dozen pieces I regret not having bought in the 33 "serious" years of collecting.
Regarding toned coins, we were called "color freaks" back then. The nice ones always commanded a premium. However, when you are adding a premium of $10 to a $28 coin, it wasn't much dollar-wise as it was percentage-wise. However, sometimes things went crazy for the monster coins. In 1979, I paid 7 times sheet for one. I was immediately offered a significant premium, which I did not accept.
Another area I was into was the GSA cc's. When they were released, you could hear the dealers at the shows at work with their pliers, cracking them all out (the cases took up too much room). I would be running from table to table, asking to see the selection before they were cracked out. There were the huge 55 gallon trash cans/dumpsters that were overflowing with the boxes and cards. I remember saying that I will only grab a half dozen, because I really didn't need them. There were hundreds in the can. Oh well.
What I never had the opportunity to do was meet someone who was actually involved in the Treasury release of dollars in the early 60's. I have read accounts of the late Harry Forman and others who were involved. I can't begin to imagine the thrill of actually opening a mint sealed bag of Morgans!
My goals for the future are primarily to have fun and enjoy the hobby, and to never lose sight of that aspect. Thanks for listening to my rambling. My god, I feel like an "old-timer"!

Your story about buying PL and DMPL silver dollars back in the 70's from Wayne Miller and John Love sure was interesting. Have you had a chance to check out the interview Miles Standish did with John Love?
