That kind of sucks, but it's something that the cautious have warned about image

<< <i> Trustworthiness. Because of its small size, ease of recognition, and relatively low value per piece, 90% US silver is one of the least profitable and therefore least tempting targets for counterfeiters here and abroad. That's not true of gold coins of any type. And silver and gold bars can and have been "drilled & filled" (drilled out, metal removed and filled with base metal). That's virtually impossible and not cost effective for 90% US silver coins. >>

Since this happened almost 20 years ago, and both convicted felons are most likely out of jail, how is this supposed to help us?

I think this is very helpful; I'll think twice before buying any Engelhard silver bars! There are 184 lead-filled bars still out there somewhere folks, and they can be your next purchase image

For sure, but there are probably millions of non lead bars out there.... and since you seem to be paranoid, are you going to stop using the $? I'm sure that there are millions of counterfeit dollars out there.

Althought I have never acquired a counterfeit bill, but you bet ya that I stay away from the dollars and any other paper currencies as far as possible!
  • There was another big bust in the 1990's, same deal. On weekends I worked at a coin store for free to chreey pick coins as payment. I saw them test several 100oz. bars by balancing then on an empty ASE tube and hitting them with a brass hammer. One day one went thud! We cut it in half and low and behold three 1/2 inch holes drilled down the whole bar. They (They are in jail, it was a large scam in Texas) did a very good job as I could not see where they plugged the ends!
