21-D Walker.....give a numerical grade please

guitarwesguitarwes Posts: 9,283 ✭✭✭

While this coin is holdered now by our host's plastic, I wanted to see what grade the forum masses agreed upon for this nice coin. Thanks for the input.

Not a walker expert but I would go with F-12

    I'll guess F-12 also.

I'll say they said F-15. I'd lean more toward 12 in terms of wear, but better dates sometimes get a little bump and this one is VERY nice for the technical grade, so... F-15.

Fine-12 is a lock, but I think F15 is more likely. Nice coin!
    When in doubt, don't.

The more I look at it, the more I know it's a solid Fine. They slabbed it a VG10. I was shocked, but what can you do?

For a circulated coin it's one of the cleanest i've seen.

At first glance it looks F12 to me.

That grade is robbery. If it was my coin I'd already be filling out the regrade submission form.

    Time to pay the tax.
  • I was shocked when Wes sent me the message telling me it came back as a VG-10 when it first was certified. I graded it at least Fine-12 with a shot of 15.

I was going to guess VG10, but only because I have this 1921-S VG10:

  • Wes---- I know the answer but most guys just don"t seem to be listening. At the present moment, both NGC and PCGS are grading extremely tight. While your coin would "normally" grade a fine12---IMHO----it got hit the two points because the coin simply "IS NOT" totally original old patina. If you look under the "United" and the "States", you will see that the coin was at one time helped along a "tiny" bit. The obverse is the same way. While the coin is still VERY NICE, both PCGS and NGC are NOT letting these coins through these days without a certain penalty.

I know this----because it has happened to me. Even the lower graded Walkers have got to be "all there" to achieve the grades that we have become accustomed to in the past. IMHO, both services are grading as they SHOULD have been grading all along. It is as if they both want "every" coin to get a football.

All of us just have to adjust our buying----in order to reflect this grading. JMHO of course. Bob [supertooth]

The 21-D looks a tad better than the 21-S does to me. So if the 21-S is a VG10 the 21-D should get the F12 nod.

  • Hi,

It's very close to this PCGS VF20 example:

I was going to guess 30 to a 35.... no matter what, that is one nice coin!

supertooth, although I agree with your synopsis with the grading services on this 21-D Walker, I still think it would sell raw any day of the week as a Fine 12.

Your still taking your chances these days by sending the coin into professionals to assess it for a consensus grade, it just might come back lower than expectations.

Both sides appear to have an even wear on the highest points, but I did give it bonus points for not having any significant bag marks, scratches or rim dings. One of the things that did concern me was the fact that the tops of the date numbers are beginning to blend into the ground, but looking at the sandal you can still make out the straps…so the coin has plenty of pros, but it also has its cons.

It is still a handsom Walker no matter how the grading services slice it.

    Thanks for sharing guitarwes.

though I do not doubt your logic or your recent experience, I know this coin was slabbed about 18 months ago...

Seeing the coin I posted that graded a VG10, would people be skiddish of buying this one at full Fine price? Looks as if mine has a touch more detail.

I would buy it a F12 $ all day long. The reverse is a 15 and the obverse is solid.

I thought 12 at first, but with those solid rims and detail coming into to the bodice, it's a solid 15. Great coin!

  • That is a nice F12-15 graded as a VG10 IMHO. This happens now, and has happened over the years where on one submission it is a F15 and on the next submission it is a VG10. I have some $20 SGs graded MS64 that don't come anywhere near some of my MS63s. Of course, the key is to find the undergraded and purchase as such. It makes you smile everytime you check your collection.

  • That coin is not a VG-10 it is a F-15.
  • That is a nice keydate and would look great in my collection, I could care less what the plastic said image
