Question about Greg Maddux

I was looking at Greg Maddux 1987 topps traded card. It appears his weight is listed at 150 lbs.
Can someone confirm that ?

The reason I ask is because his 1996 collectors choice card says 170 lbs.
A card a few years later says 180 lbs.

Now I believe his last weight check in the Majors was 196 lbs.

I don't remember Greg getting that big. He certainly wasn't fat. His legs did get huge over the years.
He does look real skinny on his 1987 topps traded card.

It just seems weird that a guy could gain 47 pounds since entering the majors and never look that fat.

I guess I'm just asking if someone could confirm the weight on his 1987 topps traded card. Maybe
it's an error, and I don't have his 1987 donruss card to compare weights.

  • I'm 5'11". When I was 21, I weighed about 140. I'm 35 now and weigh about 175 after losing about 20 pounds the last 2 years. In other words, I naturally gained around 55 pounds in 12 years. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Clearly he was on performance enhancers to be able to throw all that heat.

I absolutely agree...that is why he was such a dominant pitcher with San Diego...

well as a longtime Cubs fan Maddux and guys like Mark Grace were not exactly workout demons. Grace lit lung darts one after the other in the clubhouse and Maddux could often be seen at the McDonald's across the street from Wrigley before or after games. When the Cubs retired #31 a few weeks ago it looked as if Maddux had put on at least another 15-20 pounds since last season. Don't be surprised if he turns into the next Tony Gwynn and he's weighing in at 3 clicks in a few years.
  • He does look awfully skinny in his Topps Traded card and if you notice on the cards near the end of his career, or atleast the ones I have, his uni looks a little baggy around the belly and his legs are bigger. So in 1987 at 21 he was 150lbs and at the end of his career he is 195lbs(mlb.com). I'm not an athlete but when I was 21 I was 140lbs and I'm now 42 and at 175lbs. GETTING OLD SUCKS. Since he's a 6 footer 195lbs isn't that bad but 150lbs is borderline anorexic.

he should really consult with Valerie Bertinelli.....she knocked off a lotta weight but still has that nice "roundness" about her certain features.....i think MadDog oughta follow that lead. image

he looked like he had a big ole beer belly when they retired his number at wrigley a couple weeks ago..
    it was pretty funny

yeah Maddog was rail skinny when he broke in with the Cubs but then again, he probably didn't have the extra money for the golf cart back then..now golfing is his only exercise(7 days a week) and you know he isn't walking any courses...

That weight of 150 sounds correct. When he started he was very thin. Last time I saw him pitch (after not seeing him for a while) I thought boy he got heavy.

  • 1987 150 lbs., 20+ years later, he's 197 lbs.......is that unnatural or something? Let us know how much you weigh 20 years from now and see if it's a surprise.
  • For a professional athlete paying a sport that requires a high power output, 196 is small

For athletes that don't compete in weight classes, listed height and weight are usually just made up. Anyone have a reference for what weight Tony Gwynn was listed at throughout his career?
