Is this corrosion?

Observe the fields at 3-4 o'clock and 8 o'clock. What's this? Corrosion?

Could this coin bring more than melt? (Not mine, but it could be if it goes for melt image

Gold does not corrode. Could be some old remnants of tape, glue, or a myriad of other foreign substances.

I don't see any corrosion. Are you talking about those milk spots in the field?

Looks like a "flaking" sort of. Almost like a delamination of some type. Again, my guess is a foreign substance applied long ago thats starting to peel off.

There is no logical explanation as to what you are seeing here without examine the coin under optimum conditions. I do not think it is corrosion, unless it came into contact with something like Aqua Regia (a mixture of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid) or other types of acids.

It does have the appearance of peeling lacquered surface though, or something similar. I would not go more than melt as this might be hiding some flaws (based on the scratches across her cheek and the one by the 4 o'clock star for starters)

All in all, still a nice looking gold piece, just blown way up so defects look like the Grand
    Canyon.

Thanks. So it's possible that the flakes can be peeled off by some professionals like NCS, then? Or would the coin BB anyway because of the scratches on the cheek?

If it is a foreign substance on the coin, it can be conserved by NCS and if they think for some reason it would not grade, they would not forward it to NGC, they would simply put it into their holder providing the conservation was a total success. These things are always iffy at best, there is no way to predict what will happen once they get it into their hands on something like this.

The scratches may look bad in an enlarged image and not so bad at arms length, just hard to say. It's always a little gamble, like to gamble?
