Sales Tax in California

    Oh gheez! This all started from my simple statement that Cali had the highest state income tax and the highest state sales tax, and I think my statement was proven in my post above. Case closed. Now, you want to talk about local income taxes, property taxes and effective overall tax burdens for retirees, well you're on your own. But don't forget your gas tax, your sin tax (cigs and alcohol), your death tax, doc stamps, tire tax, battery tax etc etc etc.

    These non-coin topics were frequently discussed in the Open Forum before it went poof. Ocassionally the non-coin, and political stuff finds its way in the U.S. Coin Forum, which if OT is banned, so I suspect tomorrow, this thread will go poof too if the mods read it.

    Hey, maybe we can save this thread from poofing by talking about spots from the Mint...

    Yeah, I know. Poof.

  • << <i>Hey wait I thought core values is what Republicans were all about - sure do trumpet them up all the time. President is captain of the ship, just like the governor and therefore responsible for the ship and its direction. When the ship founders or strikes a rock, he/she is responsible. If the economy of the country crashed these last eight years, right or wrong, president takes the rap.

    BTW, uh let's see, the previous eight years presented us with the alternative to "socialism". This is not what it is about now that we have somebody as president that may leave a few more scraps around for the average joe. If privatization and trickle down have failed so miserably, which the evidence of this hardhit economy so blatantly demonstrate I think this trick of labelling new approaches "socialism" is trying to redirect peoples' attention. If the mentioned cornerstones of Reaganomics has failed so bad, can we do worse? Or should we still keep doing what is best for GM in hopes that it somehow will get this country going down the right path? >>

    Hmmm. Don't know if the above is for me, but just in case, here's my two bits! image I'm not a Republican, and I'm not a Democrat. I think both parties have contributed heavily to the shame of this country. I am however an Independent, but first and foremost an American.

    Furthermore, there is no democracy on a ship. The captain is the sole decision maker, a dictator if you will. Fortunately, our country has some checks and balances, and it is the House that holds the purse strings to our country. Yes, of course the President usually takes the rap for a bad economy, but in reality there's not much a President can do to create jobs or a vibrant economy except to create a tax and policy environment conducive to the promotion of jobs and economic growth.

    In all fairness to Bush, who I did NOT vote for either time, we had six years out of eight years of prosperity. Ironically, the last two years of the Bush admin. the Dems took control and really set up nicely for the next Dem Prez. Finally, this economy doesn't suck because of failed Bush or Reaganomics, it sucks because of the Dems policy of "a house in every driveway" and greedy big business lying, cheating, and stealing from America while our government, both dems and republicans, stands idly by taking their cut in political contributions.

    this thread is done anyway.

    i think zeebob's initial question regarding the new california state sales tax has been asked and answered.

    just in case, effective 04/01/09, general sales tax increases 1% (from 7.25 to 8.25) so just add 1% to your local rate and your good. look at one of your customer receipts to find the loca rate your paying now.

    maybe you should start a spot thread, no?

    adamlaneus that's why the premiums are up at the mint. They had to hire the "officiall US Mint sneezer" to sneeze on the coins/medals before they are sealed. You know the price of flem is way up!

    4.5% here in Virginia. Whatever your politics might be, you can't beat the sales taxes in the red states (maybe purple this past election year).

    << <i>Love that stimulus package ya'll voted for out there ? >>

    Talk about getting screwed in the stimulus package; the Senate Majority leader (pinky Reid) is from our state; but he couldn't get more for us than being 50th place out of 51 areas getting stimulus money. The only place getting less of the package than us is Puerto Rico. And here our housing market was the 3rd hardest hit when the bottom fell out of the real estate market. Thank god that scum bag is up for re-election in two years and we can vote his azz out of office.

    My thread about a 19th-century philatelic item gets poofed by a moderator even though clearly indicated "OT" , but this thread full of political bullsh1t is alive?

    WTF!

    Moderator, cure thy rectocranial inversion.

  • Is it politics or is it comedy?

    Cuz I bin laffin my ass off.

    Some real funny stuff here.

    I'm amazed that it takes four pages to answer zeebob's question about cali's sales tax.

    Then again, it takes 2200 pages to complain about the UHR.

    On a more serious note, is anybody looking forward to the upcoming Braille commem?

  • << <i>On a more serious note, is anybody looking forward to the upcoming Braille commem? >>

    I'll pick up one of each (proof and UNC). I try to do that at the least. Gotta tell you though, these commem's are starting to look all the same. I wish the Mint would commemorate the artistry of the turn of the 20th century. I'd love to see lady liberties and Indian chiefs return to coins other than ASE"s, AGE's, and APE's.

    Ooooooo. Baaaaadd.

    Let me absorb some of that upcoming hatred:

    If you cannot see a spot, does it exist?

  • It's hard to disagree with nitro and adam. We do need some fresh inspiring commems. I hope a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Braille will go to one of the foundations for the blind, cuz that would be the only reason why i would buy it.

    Better idea would be to pick up Atlanta & move it to CA. image

    The news people are saying "so goes California, so goes the nation."

    I sincerely hope not! image

    California has had a poor climate for business for a long time, and now they are paying for it. And given what they doing now, there is no way that they were ever learn.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • That Braille commemorative really is a goofy looking coin. No pun intended. Hmm, I'm disappointed. The reverse is silly. And why would they put a frenchman on an american coin? They should have made half the coin in braille, but no they spelled out the word/name braille using three letters BRL. Dunno, maybe its me.

    Edit: And shouldn't they have had a blind person sculpt it or design it. Mint sucks.

    Let's say you are self employed make a measly 100k in CAL.

    This is what you get to look forward to:

    Fed .................................39% marginal when Bush cuts expire
    STATE .............................12%
    Soc Sec self employment 15%
    city/county income taxes vary. 0-3%
    -----------------------------------------------------------

    ......AT LEAST....................66% on your next dollar.

    This does not include all the misc fees, SDI, 'garbage' fee assessments and those are getting bizarre. So after you have a little saved you go to buy a car in L.A. and get to pay------------

    Sales tax in L.A. county 10.25 %---you think that's good for the car biz?

    Do a rolling stop at a stop sign.......$350 or more in some jurisdictions. Get a car towed out of the 2 hour limit shopping center parking lot while you're in the movies---$200 city release fee then towing and storage of $200+.

    It just doesn't get any better than that.
    Have a nice day

    Well, let's break it down.
    The thread is about TAXES. How humorous are they ?
    The people are at odds with the mint and it's ineffective way of delivering their wares and for whatever reason, someone isn't going to buy into the commems this year. . How humorous is that ?
    Skipping a new commemorative coin because of a lack of desire to collect a coin commemorating the usage of BRAILLE as a language for the seeing impaired... How humorous is that ?

    Having it RUB me the wrong way and being "BLIND" to the opportunity to collect a coin that has historical importance in our society image how humorous is that ?

    Having lost friends for sucky puns and being challenged on the boards with a statement such as yours isn't humorous either, but I don't want to RUB you the wrong way. Maybe you're LOOKING at it blindly.

    Just in case you don't understand, we can meet in PMs.

    Dudes and dudettes,

    In the OP, I was just curious if the tax rate was going to go up a point. A co-worker mentioned it, but I didn't see anything in the news - so I asked my most reliable source, the Internet... image

    Didn't mean to start war, it was just a question. "California Tea Party?" Good-grief, the environmental impact statement needed for something like that would be enough to send any proper planner into convulsions. I think I'll go visit the JJ Tea Party site now. Rumor is that they sell nice coins. I think I'll go check that out.

    Cheers,

    Bob

    I suggest a solution to the current mess the USA and California is in would be to:

    1. Repeal all federal, state and local taxes, fees and other charges imposed against "income" and amend the federal and state constitutions to prohibit any and all taxes, fees and other charges imposed against "income";

    2. Adopt a tax system that taxes "consumption" (a tax on every dollar that you spend), with federal consumption tax being set at 10% and state consumption tax being set at 3%;

    3. Repeal most, if not all, tax deductions and credits;

    4. Phase out and eventually eliminate most, if not all, social welfare programs that provide aid to persons who have the ability to be self sufficient but choose not to be; and limit our governments' activities to their traditional functions of military defense against external threats, the enactment of and enforcement of criminal laws to protect against crime, and infrastructure construction;

    5. Phase out and eventually eliminate the government agencies who provide the social services that will be phased out and eliminated; and

    6. Change the public education system to one where parents of school aged children can opt out of public schools by taking vouchers that will pay for the cost of having their children attend charter schools or private schools where teachers are paid according to merit.

    Do I expect anything like the above to ever be implemented by either of the political parties (Dems and Repubs)? Not in my life time.

    The continuing high speed rush of the USA and California down the superhighway socialism is truly disheartening. One day we will wake up in a society where everyone [except our political masters who are so special and better than the masses that they are exempt from the rules that they imposes upon the general population] is truly equal,....................................... specifically equally miserable since those whose mindset is to strive, produce and achieve will be beat down so much that they give up and join with those whose mindset is to sit around and do nothing except complain about how miserable they are.

    Equal opportunity is a good thing.

    Equal outcome, regardless of the amount of input just Sucks.
