  • Neato! One thing to remember when buying a mold tho is that stated capacity is usually expressed in troy ounces of GOLD. Since the specific gravity of gold is almost double that of silver, you can expect the mold to accomodate roughly 1/2 of its stated capacity in terms of silver metal. I like your initial attempts. What type of stamping will you utilize?

Looks like the classic definition of a "blivet."

I would like to see if we can figure out a way to do something like the gold bar from a recent thread..Hereonly in silver with a Logo, fineness mark, weight and serial number.

I'm thinking a Drop Hammer might be the way to go.......image........image

All kidding aside, we were thinking of making some ingots with our Logo to sell in our store to folks who have known us for several years and see how it goes, if nothing else it would be good advertising........
  • To get a clear, crisp imprint of that magnitude, you may need a 12 or 20 ton hydraulic press. You can buy one with the "A" frame and the jack already built together for about 200 bucks, perhaps even cheaper. The custom die will be right in the same pricing ballpark as well. PM me if you need a contact for your dies. They did a fantastic job with mine!

  • Thanks, I was thinking of a press but did not know if that would be enough pressure...
  • For some reason I thought you would heat the die up and stamp the bar kinda like branding cattle lol
    Its all relative
  • A good solid blow from a 3 pound mini-sledge works well for my applications. However, my largest die has a surface area thats relatively small, so I can get away with such a primitive set-up. If one wanted a larger/deeper impression, I dont think the mini sledge would do it. A 20 ton hydraulic press should be able to "git er done" though! You just need some way to "collar" your die I would think so that it couldnt possibly slip out and shoot someone's eye out!image

  • CaptHenway, it looks like your "blivet" comment fell on deaf ears. Not too many people know what a bliver is or was. (Especially younger folks.) I almost fell out of my chair when I saw your comment. image

  • Blivet or bliver? Either way I don't know the definition, Please enlighten me.

    10 pounds of sheet in a 5 pound bag?image

  • OK here we go again, I took the same ingot from yesterday and used my torch to float the metal on top to get it even, then made a crude die of Lincoln and gave it a whack.........

Notice that it is not Intaglio, it's Cameo, the weakness is not due to the strike it's because I used a little too much force when making the die.

The next one will be a lot more crisp.............opinions welcomeimage

That's what I am aiming at, I may try the reverse with a wheat back and change the "ONE CENT" to "ONE TROY OUNCE" in between the wheat ears.......
  • Shaping up to be a great project. Looks like I now have competition!
