Dan's HOF Rookie Auto Project from the beginning.....UPDATED..7/6 w/Hank Greenberg,Satchel Paige,Pau

Hello everyone,
My name is Dan and for quite a while now I've been wanting to start a thread about my HOF RC Auto project and the progress I have made. I've been reading thenavarro's thread and it is one of the main reason's why I check this site everyday, to see what new Auto(s) Mike just got in. I thought it would be nice to start a thread to show everyone what I have been adding to my HOF RC Auto collection these past couple years. Because there is so much I will break it up into many parts so it loads quicker. OK, so now I'm gonna start at the beginning of my story. Back in May 07' I attended a local show here in CT at UNH and Luis Tiant and Jim Rice were signing for free so when I got there I already had both there RC's with me and since my wife was with me I decided to look around the show for another rookie for each guy because I love rookies and I thought it would be really cool to have 2 auto's of both these great players signed. So after getting the extra RC's and having both Rice and Tiant (who was an awesome guy and joking with everyone) signing them, a new love was born!

The next couple months I did alot of research to find which HOFers sign and which ones were still alive and where do they sign? After stumbling onto SHL I was in love, again! I made a list of every living HOFer and put them in order of their age from oldest to youngest. My goal was and still is to get all the oldest guys now and work my way down to the bottom. Bob Feller was a player who I just finished reading his bio and was really interested in meeting him and since his RC was in 1936 I though it would be the greatest thing having him sign his 1936 RC. So I found 2 actually and went to Cooperstown that year and it was one heck of a 1st time to choose to go their because both Ripken and Gwynn were getting inducted and all the streets were shut down and it there were tons of people. I did get to see Cal when he entered Doubleday field and both me and my brother thought it was awesome, no auto though
which is fine as just experiencing it was good enough for me. Anyway I walked into the Tuncliffe Inn and saw all these HOFers and I was just blown away to see this many HOFers in one room right in front of me! Unfortunately I only had $40 on me as money is really tight with me so I could only get Feller and he was a Very nice guy to both me and my younger brother who was with me and he was telling me of the day they took the photo that was on his RC. Afterward we walked around and I saw Monte Irvin just sitting outside with an author of a book he was in so I went over and talked to both of them and got their auto in the book. I then went over to this former Negro League player Willie Fordham and talked to him for about 20 mins and it was definitely an experience I will never forget as the stories these players tell are priceless! After we said bye to Willie there was another Negro Leaguer signing so I had $5 left on me and gave it to him for his card Auto's. Here was my haul from that glorious day:

1 Feller Auto was on a book here's the other one:
the next show wasn't untill that October but good lord was that month a HUGE one for me!1st was the MAB show, here's what I got:
now the 53' Bowman Color set is my favorite from the 50's b/c I love the photography on them so I thought it would be awesome to get as many in the set auto'd, here's #1
then the RC
this guy was really nice, what a class act!
and being an A's fan I could pass these 2 up!
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
<< <i>Sounds like this is a pretty fun project. Just don't ask Johnny Bench for a free auto and I think you will be ok.
HAAAA! Hilarious
Nice start to your set, sir. Good luck in your endeavor. If I might make a suggestion...you should PM TheNavarro. If you combined your efforts on one or two common needs, perhaps you could mutually benefit....meaning if one of you was at a show, you could get the other an auto too. He's pretty far along, but somehow I doubt he'll ever be "finished"

for $8 an Auto I had to get as many Minnie as I could!Unfortunatly I wasn't able to find a 53' Bowman (I also got his book signed by him)
Cepeda was also really cheap and playing on the A's made me like him even more!
now while there, I looked around the card show and stumbled upon this beauty and was really happy to have just enough on my CC to get it!
OH and here's the back
Now I also like the idea of having cards signed by multiple players and I got a few cards signed by these guys but since they're not completed I havn't scanned them in, was they are done though I will show them to all!
all the auto's are paid for and the only free ones are whatever is free at a show.
Vito- I have talked to Mike who's an awesome guy btw and I love his collection and when possible we help each other out
Feb was the same, another big name that was high on my list
March is when the train began to start rolling and it started off with something I've never done before.....mail-in's? Here's who was mailed in, really happy with these:
Once I saw Ernie Banks was signing, I was going wherever, thankfully wherever was Baltimore only a 3 1/2 hr drive:
1954 Banks-Sold
April brought no HOFers but a possible HOFer in Oliva who was a mail-in and Kranepool who was the free auto at this years UNH show:
May was good as I was wanting to get Marichal's for awhile and White was free at this Hofstra show:
1954 Aaron- Sold
July was HUGE!! as I made sure this HOF weekend I would have more money! but 1st was the All-Star Fanfast in NY, got these babies signed there:
now it was time for the HOF!!!Here's who I was able to get:
this was getting signed by Yogi when some freakin kid who was waiting for a pic leaned on the table and dragged the card as Yogi was signing, yeah I was not happy
This guy is hilarious! he was awesome to be around!
another former Oakland A, if you didn't blink!
My favorite set of the 60's, I LOVE the pics and am trying for a set auto'd, just nocking off the easy one's for now
My 1st multi-signed card finished
Man did I feel relieved to knock this guy off my list, the oldest living HOFer
one for each of my slowly growing sets
yeah Another former Athletic!
and of course, more Negro Leaguers!
WOW, what a month!
1949 Roberts- Sold
these were the freebies
yes another Oakland A
and for my set
Next up for Sept. was only 1 guy, but Good lord what a guy! the #1 HOFer I wanted to meet..................................................WILLIE MAYS!!
opposite of what I've heard he was a REALLY nice guy and asked me where I wanted him to sign all while he was chatting with me
now he couldn't really see well so after that 1st Auto which i wasn't really paying attenton to where he was signing, I made sure he got it right the 2nd time
All in all a good experience and very happy to knock this one off the list
next up, October. Nothing really big as Mays had drained me of all my money but I stillmanaged to get enough to send these in to St. Louis for Brock to sign (No, i wasn't going to fly there this time)
upgraded this one
Then went to Hofstra and got Whitey Ford who seemed to be eluding me for a YEAR! 1st was Oct 07' where he canceled, then in May where I got Marichal he was he cancelled that one as well, so I HAD to get him at this one and prayed he didn't cancel.Luck was on my side!
and guess who was signing for FREE AGAIN! Hey I can never say no to a free auto of a HOFer
had this one layin around and figured why not as I wanted one signed in sharpie and once again he was awesome to be around
and these were mailed in to the show in Chicago
my 1st non-Baseball HOFer Auto and maybe the start of a new HOFer collection?
and finally a day before I left to go on my month long vacation to Colombia with my wife, I got to meet the DUKE, Phil Niekro and Minnie again
this one I thought would be awesome to have signed as I don't have any authentic Vintage Negro League cards, so I picked this one up and was torn on what color to have it signed in, was really leaning toward black which I normally don't like, but settled on blue maybe a mistake but either way I like it and can;t go back now
and for the set
I started doing TTM back in Sept. as I was just sending in the 1965 commons to be signed and received most back. For this year though I would like to start doing HOF TTM.I will update this thread as new Auto's get added. Before I finished typing I would like to also show what HOF RC Auto's I have picked up since this project began:
now I also collect HOF R.C's which unfortunately/fortunately has been funding this project so that has dwindled dramatically as this is my main focus.
Thank You,
Dan
PS: If anyone has ANY DECEASED HOFer ROOKIES PLEASE PM me, as I am desperately searching for them. I have seen each deceased HOFers RC signed from 1948 up, so I know they're out there! If you have any PLEASE PM me and Hopefully we can work something out
Update- This has been sold
If you decide to get those all slabbed by PSA, they are pretty good at working with you on price for a large lot. Love your Early Wynn. That one still eludes me. I know we've talked about Mays before via PM, but if you want another one, he's signing in March at MAB show. Might be time to get a 52 Topps Mays signed as well. You didn't happen to buy the 39 and 40 Playball Dimaggios last night from SCP did you? I was tied with the high bidder at $835.00 but his bid was earliest so he won. I couldn't bring myself to go higher although I can't tell you how many times I went back to the screen during the final 30 minutes and made my bid, but did not confirm it. If I had known I was going to get my Jordan so cheap today, I would have went ahead and upped and won the Dimaggio's last night. I had budgeted up to $800++ for the Jordan and I got it for $206.50 so it went really well for me on that one. Good luck with your collection.
Mike
Also if you go to the National this year, let me know and maybe we can meet up one day for lunch or something. I plan on getting to go but not sure yet, will depend on my work schedule as we get closer.
Mike
I'm more of a JSA kind a guy plus I like the BGS holders as they're more durable than PSA's as I plan on having these for a while. No I did not put a bid in on the Dimaggio's as I'm not really interested in those, I would be more interested in some of his issues from 1936 though if any of them ever pop up. On Mays March signing, yes I was aware as I am on MAB's site about every other 10 mins
Dan
Thanks guys for your comments!
Oaktown- I would love to own a 52' Mathews, 63' Stargell or 65' Hunter and the sad thing is that a few years ago I saw them all in auctions and for decent prices, I just wasn't smart enough to pick them up then!
Also just got these in TTM, not HOF but me being an A's fan, I love Shantz and I love the way his RC came out signed
for my 1953 Bowman set

HOF SIGNED FOOTBALL RCS
no this wasn't a book signing, which is a shocker because all he's done lately is sign books. This was an actual signing at Last Licks which is run by Steiner. 1 of the Magics is for me while the other is my brother's, thanks for asking though, I will keep you in mind if I get an extra one next time around,
Dan
and got this at a private signing he had last week
Thanks for looking,
Dan
Dan
<< <i>Thank You! I'm working on getting a few real tough ones, but we'll see what happens,
Dan >>
What's cooking?
Mike
I'm still workin on getting that 49' Campy Auto also trying to save up for those auto's you pointed out to me earlier as they are beauty's and am trying to get an Aaron or two for his upcoming june show,
Dan
btw- nice pickup on that MJ and Gomez

Hey Dan,
Aaron is doing Last Lick's at $160.00 a pop compared to the private signing with Steiner of $360 or so. They still come with Steiner certs as well from Last Lick's. A much better deal!! They are both the same day I think.
Mike
at 1st Steiner had only a private signing and it was like $300 and it was on April 15. so I called them and asked them why so high and they said it was always this high. I told them when he signed last year it was only $160, I guess the guy I was talking to didn't know his stuff, anyway I was damn thrilled when I saw he was doing another public signing and for the same price as I need another 54' Auto as I sold my only one,
Dan
These are from the Philly show last weekend
Finally completed this one, only needed Robby
thought I got an upgrade but when I got it realized it was a little too blurry for me
Finally got one I really like, nice card and auto
a couple more for the collection, was looking for an upgrade to my 1st ones but when I got these I realized they weren't that much better, whatever I'll just put them away
have a couple shows next weekend ,so hopefully should have some more then unless anymore TTM's come in,
Thanks for looking,
Dan
Very nice, I love the 62 leaders card, I'm actually working on that one myself. I might try to eventually trade you out of one of your 51 Mays as my current one is trimmed. If you would just collect Presidential auto's it would be much easier
Mike
In the future I might start looking to obtain Presidential Auto's but right now I'm just sticking with the HOFers. The Mays' aren't going anywhere as I don't plan on moving them anytime soon so you have time. I was actually considering getting another of the 63' Topps LL cards auto'd and have Mays sign it 1st instead of 4th so it would be easier for me to figure out where I would want everyone else to sign,
-Dan
Regarding Presidential autos, I'm trying for the Presidents that have served in the 1900s to present. But, I'm making it a little more difficult by only accepting autos in books that they signed. I have managed to get from Clinton back through Johnson, Ike, Truman, Hoover, Coolidge, and McKinley (assignated in office, so the book on his life that I have is not signed by him, but on another paper dropped into the book). JFK, FDR, and Teddy Roosevelt are my holy grails as they all wrote books either before or after office and signed copies are available. But, each will run $1500+.
<< <i>Love the 1962 HR leaders card. I like to do one of those myself. But, unless I could do it TTM, I won't get it done very quickly as I don't make it to shows that often.

If you ever decide to try the 63' HR LL card either buy it with mays already signed or have Mays sign it 1st, I wouldn't recommend it any other way. Thats an awesome idea for your presidential Auto's and its something I would Love to persue later on in life, congrats on such a sweet collection,

I put an early bid in on your Mays rookie you have listed on ebay. I might end up getting it to upgrade mine. Haven't decided yet.
